Re: preop today, bowel prep?

I guess your Doc really wants you squeaky clean.. All I had to do was : my last meal was to be at noon the day before surgery, start to drink plenty of water and then at. 4:00 pm start to take the mag. cit. Within an hour and a half of time. Awful. Then it's no more fun! Stay very close to a bathroom, but most of all remember to drink plenty of water. good luck.

Re: preop today, bowel prep?

Wow... I thought mine was bad. I had no solids/only clear liquid after midnight the night before, then 2 bottles of magnesium citrate, one at 10am and one at 1pm... and then let the games begin. I thought the "fireworks" would never stop! But like Sjdv said, your doc really wanted you clean. Poor you! Best of luck to you... both for the bowel prep and the surgery!

Re: preop today, bowel prep?

Yes, I forgot to mention also, nothing to eat or drink after midnight before the surgery, I to was allowed clear liquids after that 4:00 pm time up to midnight. But after the surgery I remember how thirsty I was. I couldn't stop drinking, I was so dried mouthed.

Re: preop today, bowel prep?

I just had a rectal surgery this morning. I did not eat anything at all yesterday just drunked water and coke. I drinked 10oz of MOM at 7p last night and was fine to have the surgery this morning. Im sure it will be different to prep for hysterectomy though. Will fine that out in 3 weeks. Yaya what a joy back to back surgerys.

Re: preop today, bowel prep?

Sounds similar to what I did--but it actually took three bottles of Mag citrate to get the full clean out. But I was grateful for that later--I didn't have any post-op constipation, and lots of the sisters here had trouble with that. It's not as bad as you imagine it to be. I took mine chilled in a martini glass. I added some crystal lite powder to it to improve the taste. You'll be pumped full of IV fluid so you won't be dehydrated. Best wishes for successful surgery and healthy recovery.

Re: preop today, bowel prep?

I also had 1 mag citrate at 3pm day before surgery...enema before bed. Never did that before but found some good tips in these forums! Ate very lite day before prep then only clear liquids day of prep. Actually wasnt that bad...not as bad as colonoscopy prep! Not sure what the enema does since I still had to go in the am. Bowel prep is done for safety reasons (in case the bowel gets nicked in surgery) and also makes them smaller during surgery to stay out of the way. Also read here that some sisters who did not have prep before surgery had terrible constipation problems post op. I had no problems w BM 2days post op actually the opposite of constipation! But everything is working TG. Good luck to you...drink as much as you can tolerate a couple days leading up to surgery! You will be fine.

Re: preop today, bowel prep?

I have the bowel prep to do too. I also have a couple of other lovely things to do. I need to use a douche and then take a shower and using iodine. I am having abdominal surgery, bikini cut so maybe that is why I am doing the extra. Getting anxious but glad I have my sisters here to help me thru the pre-op.
