Re: New here

Dear Bonnie,

Most doctors prescribe something like Percocet post-op. That is what I had. The doctor told me that as soon as I woke up I could take a pill with a little water. Until that time, they put the pain medication into your IV. If your doctor didn't already tell you what he prescribes, as him or his nurse. Usually, after you are home, they recommend that you take ibuprofen if the pain isn't severe. My doctor told me to try Motrin-IB only when I felt it necessary because the pain medications are constipating. To try and avoid constipation, try prunes, prune juice or oatmeal. I ate a lot of oatmeal after I was discharged. There are many women here who can give you answers about what they experienced. Your doctor doesn't want you to be in a lot of pain. After a few days at home, I hardly felt any pain. Just don't overdo it and start cleaning your house. The vacuum cleaner is the worst thing to use for at least 4-6 weeks post-op. I did my vacuuming the night before my surgery.

Re: New here

Try not to worry about it and stress too much - that's not good for you, as you likely know. There are many stories on this site, which will illustrate that people's experiences are different but it also helps to hear various perspectives and learn about what you're going through. Take in as much information as you're comfortable with, and have faith in your medical staff - they do these procedures a LOT, and are very good at it. Follow all their directions, even if you don't feel like it, because they know what they're doing.
Best wishes to you - check in and let us know how it all goes.

Re: New here

I had an abdominal hyst with a spinal in addition to general anesthesia. I could feel it after, and they were good about controlling my pain in the hospital and for three weeks afterward. Don't try to tough it out, if you need pain control, ask for it. I didn't have any trouble with my digestion, i was off work 6 weeks, and feel SO much better now, a year and a month after. Good Luck!
