27yrs old, Hysterectomy will be in June, any advice?

Hello-
I am 27, will be 28 in April. Have 4 kids and will be having a hysterectomy in June since my kids will be out of school for summer. Exact date isn't set because they aren't booking for June yet and I also have to get my iron level up and keep it up before hysterectomy or else I will need a blood transfusion. Dr is pretty certain I have adenomyosis given my symptoms and after a graphic pic I showed her of how my cycles are (my poor doctor but she thanked me for showing her so she knows what I am truly dealing with) she said an ablation is no longer an option. Do any of you have advice on what to expect pre op and post op? I am trying to fully prepare myself for all of this.
Thanks

I'm still pre-op, but just wanted to let you know you aren't alone. I was hoping for an ablation to stop my heavy periods, but when my doctor listened to my symptoms and saw my enlarged uterus on an ultra sound, she suspects adenomyosis, so no ablation for me either. I'm 35 and will be having a Davinci hysterectomy on April 24th.

Browse through this site, it's full of useful information. Research various hysterectomies on reputable sites like Mayo Clinic, etc.

Just wondering but is there a certain reason why you say not to? I already have 4 kids and had tubal ligation done. We went over all the options and for a year my dr had refused to do a hysterectomy only offered the ablation until my symptoms (bleeding/flooding, clots that are huge and get bigger each period along with bleeding getting worse every month, bad cramps that keep me in bed, plus back and leg pain) that at yesterdays appt she told me the ablation is no longer an option and for past 6 months I have been actually wanting a hysterectomy, I am miserable.

I opted for the abdominal hysterectomy but I think I need to do more research on the da vinci because it is also an option for me but really never heard of it.

Ashlynn -

Make sure you discuss things like:

Can you / should you keep your cervix?
Also are you keeping your ovaries? There ate definiely health risks to having them removed at a young age.
Will it be a laproscopic procedure?
make sure that you fully understand why an ablation isn't an option since once organs are removed they can't be put back in.

My dr was actually surprised that I even knew what adenomyosis was but did tell me after looking at everything in my chart and tests the past year plus the graphic pic of bleeding and clot she said that all the info she had plus my symptoms she is pretty sure that I have it but won't know for sure unless a hysterectomy was done. I actually went in to her office changing my mind on ablation myself and debating the hysterectomy knowing a hyst would be the better option plus knowing that with how heavy the flooding and bleeding is the ablation would just fail. Good luck with your hysterectomy. I need to do some more research on the da vinci because I am actually leaning toward the abdominal hyst but da vinci is my only other option.

Yay for no ablation! I had a tubal + an ablation done 6 years ago....it went great for 5 years, but the last year I've been in crippling pain every month from a crappy thing called post-ablation syndrome (which my doctor just confirmed I had, after examining my uterus post-hysterectomy).

I'm 30 and just had a hysterectomy 10 days ago. Super easy, recovery has been great, and I am already feeling amazingly better than I was before surgery. I hadn't realized how much I was captive to the pain each month!

Good luck!

Find out if your doctor is planning on allowing you to keep your ovaries. Taking them out at such a young age is a HUGE decision.

I had an ablation 3.5 years ago at the age of 27. I was quite hopeful that it would be a long term solution for me, unfortunately it was not. When my GYN told me that my next best option would be for me to remove my uterus and one of my ovaries, I was not the least bit surprised. I know that this was the best decision for me. I trust my doctor and knew that the option of living in pain was no longer going to work.

Listen to your gut, find a doctor you trust, try beyond all mean to KEEP at least one of your ovaries, and by some comfy PJ's and new sheets for those first few weeks of post-op... lol!
