Hospital Stay.......

My surgery is this Monday at 11:00. Doc says I should be able to go home at 7:30. Is this reasonable?

Re: Hospital Stay.......

Totally depends on type of surgery...I got a DvH and went home about 24 hrs after surgery. I think abdominal is usually at least 2 days. Same day seems quick! Good luck! OX

Re: Hospital Stay.......

It is surgery dependent, and dependent on how you do. I have read of some women going home that same day, and sometimes they stayed longer. I have also heard of some women who requested that they be allowed to stay the night.

For me, I had a TAH BSO, and was in the hospital for 3 1/2 days.

Good luck to you...

Re: Hospital Stay.......

I had an LSH, and was out the same day. Though, I think it may have been helpful to stay the whole night.

Re: Hospital Stay.......

I had TAH on March 22 at 10:30 am and was home March 23 at 2:00 pm. I think it has a lot to do with pain tolerance, ability to pass urine and gas (due to anesthesia effects) and mobility. I was up and walking 4 hours after surgery, stopped IV pain meds a few hours after that, had cath out and urinating on my own within half an hour and then my bowels started waking up in the middle of the night, so by morning, it was just a matter of checking vitals and making sure I could eat without getting sick. I could, so they released me.

All depends on how you recover, I think. Good luck and hey! No matter if it takes 1 day or 4 days in the hospital, so long as you get better! Peace.

Re: Hospital Stay.......

I'm having my surgery monday too and my doc said if everything goes well, both surgical and for me I could possibly be out by dinner (surgery is at 7am) but to plan to stay overnight just in case.

Re: Hospital Stay.......

I had my surgery at 7:30am and was home by 6pm and they took everything but my right ovary. We actually even stopped at Dairy Queen so I could get a shake (I just sat in the car while DH got it). I think I got better rest at home without machines beeping/vitals being taken.

Re: Hospital Stay.......

I'm having a DvH and doc says I'll be home that night. I'm packing an overnight bag to leave in the car just in case since we're an hour from the hospital. I was kind of looking forward to a night away from home too!!

Re: Hospital Stay.......

I had DvH as well and was told by the doc that it would be my decision as to how I was feeling if everything went as planned as to whether or not to go home the same day. I'm not one to wake easily from anesthesia and am also a huge worry-wart so for me, it was more comforting to be at the hospital overnight and go home the next day. To meet the requirements to go home, I had to pee and pass gas. I peed that night, but it was 1pm the next day before anything else moved. I can't imagine having rushed that with the pain and waking up from anesthesia. I'm glad I stayed.

Re: Hospital Stay.......

I had an abdominal hysterectomy on a Friday morning and I was home by Monday late afternoon. The Dr told me that I could go home as early as Sunday but told him I wanted my 3 nts in the hospital...I have 3 kids at home and needed all the alone time that I could get.

Once Sunday came along, I said to myself that I was nowhere near feeling great to go home...I felt much better on Monday. I did the entire stay in the hospital with no pain meds (they gave me Dilaudid in recovery but since it did nothing for the pain, I refused to take that or anything..just dealt with it. Wasn't that bad just like a 5-6 on the 1-10 pain better with every day that passed.

Not sure why kind of procedure you're having but I guess the amount of your stay will have a lot to do with you.
