New here and question about pain after ultrasounds

Hi everyone,
Originally posted this in the new here forum, hopefully this is the right place for this post!

I am scheduled to have the daVinci hysterectomy and ovary removal (not sure of the abbreviations I should be using) on April 4th.

A bit of background about me, I've been suffering with endometriosis since I was 13 (am 45 now). I've had ovarian cysts on occasion, but they have always gone away. I've had two laps to clear out the endo. The past couple of years the pain has gotten much worse.

I finally went to the gyne in February since I had been bleeding since the end of December. Sometimes light and sometimes heavy. I had a transvaginal ultrasound and a sonohysterogram done. That latter was so painful, I thought I was going to pass out! Turns out I have a tipped uterus and an "L" shaped cervix. Was told I had two 5 cm cysts on my left ovary and a 3 cm cyst on my right ovary and a uterine polyp. Was told to come back for another ultrasound in 3 weeks. For about a week after, I had alot of ovarian pain, back pain and it hurt when I coughed or sneezed. (I have this pain randomly anyway, but for that week it was constant).

I just had the second transvaginal ultrasound done and am having that pain again. Turns out I also have at least one fibroid tumor, excessive scaring, adhesions and the doctor said I have stage 4 endo.

I was just wondering if the pain I am experiencing is because of the internal ultrasounds are aggravating everything?

I'm glad I found this site and have been reading a lot of the posts and have found a ton of great tips to prepare me both pre-op and post-op.

Re: New here and question about pain after ultrasounds

Even before my uterus was enlarged (and mine is in a normal position) I've always hurt and cramped the rest of the day after having a transvaginal ultra sound and I usually spot several days too. My cervix has always been tender. Touching it throws it into spasm. That's just been my experience with all of my transvaginal ultrra sounds (I've had well over 10). If you're concerned, don't hesitate to call your doctor's nurse and ask questions. That's their job.

Thanks Abagayle. I figured that's what it was, the pain is not excruciating, but enough to interrupt my sleep! 10 more days and this will all be over with, I can't wait!

Re: New here and question about pain after ultrasounds

I would call your doctor and ask. The fact that your are in pain after the ultrasound may be important for them to know. At worse they will say that they expected as much and you will be in the same spot you are now.

Good luck to you.

New here and question about pain after ultrasounds

Thanks, I think I will let them know this morning. I just hate bothering them if it is something minor. Don't want to be known as the problem patient lol.

Re: New here and question about pain after ultrasounds

I had pain after mine, but that was caused by the fact that they could not do the ultrasound very well. One fibroid was large and has moved my uterus to the right and back a little.

They wanted to put water in my uterus to check for polyps, trying to insert the water tube proved useless and it was such an ordeal they kept pushing and trying. I was in pain the rest of that day and the day after.

My da vinci surgery is on Thursday of this week. I don't even know how many fibroids I have, they could only see two, one very large one and one in the uterine wall. They couldn't see past the large one although it measured 7cm, I guess where it is makes it difficult.

Re: New here and question about pain after ultrasounds

I had the same problem with the water ultrasound, turned out that my cervix has a 90% angle, man that was painful!

Hope everything goes well for you on Thursday!

Re: New here and question about pain after ultrasounds

It is better to ask questions, than not. I don't think that they would say you are a problem patient. This is pretty difficult stuff. At most, they will say that is to be expected for someone in your condition.

Let us know what they said...

I ended up not calling, because the pain started to go away.
