Getting Scared!

Have total abdominal hysterectomy scheduled for april 10th, which is 15 days, 17 hours and 41 minutes. I have been so anxious for the surgery to get here and now today, its finally catching up with me. All of a sudden im depressed and really scared about the surgery. it has to happen cuz of all my medical problems but im just really scared. i still want it to hurry up and get here but now that its getting closer im getting the nerves. any advice or tips for calming nerves till then, prepping the house, what to bring/do at hospital, post op etc?

Re: Getting Scared!

Really dig into this site for helps on getting ready. There is so much here to help. The pre op tab has a lot of stuff. Don't bother going to the post op site, it will make things more confusing, I think. I did my best to stay busy. I cleaned, scrubbed, organized, cooked, put prepared meals in the freezer.
Getting nervous is normal. Think of things that help you to relax.

Re: Getting Scared!

Iwillsurvive - Being scared and nervous about this surgery is completely normal. This is MAJOR SURGERY with removal of an important organ. Of course you are scared. This is an overwhelming experience. It does not matter that you know you are having it due to medical issues - that is the logical side of you talking. The emotional side of you still has not caught up with this yet, and may not until well after your surgery. That is okay. Let this emotional side of you get on this site and express herself. It is really important, and can really help.

In the meantime, my suggestion is to stay busy...very busy if you can manage it. Super clean your house (you won't be able to do that after surgery for quite some time), get meals in the freezer for easy pop-in-the-microwave dinners during recovery, get on line or go to your local store and buy loose fitting comfy clothes, get some DVDs and/or books and/or magazines to keep your brain entertained, and prepare your recovery area with blankets and small pillows (to hold against your tummy when you cough or sneeze).

You should not have to bring much to the hospital. I did not bring hardly anything. The magazine I brought really went unread because I could not concentrate very well due to all of the drugs. If you bring reading material, keep it light and easy to read. Some ladies bring a favorite robe. I just wore the gown they gave me and the weird mesh panties. You will see what I mean when you get there.

Good luck to you, sweetie. We are here to support you, and will help you through this.

(((Hugs)))

vb82: thanks, and the party sounds cute lol, the day before "our" surgery, my hunney, daughter and i are doing something special together for a "farewell" lol. i got listening to that song "im a survivor" by beyonce i think it is, and got thinking about saying farewell to it. if you listen to the lyrics it fits it perfect! thanks for the encouragement, youre a good friend. time is still going by slow but now that its 2 weeks away i cant help but start to get nervous.

Re: Getting Scared!

mairstale: thank you so much for all the encouragment. i have had surgeries before but nothing like this. i think im more scared at how i will be mentally afterwards than physically. im expecting pain, its common sense, its the mental anguish afterwards and the regret that im not looking forward to. im a very emotional person to begin with. oh dont worry, i have been keeping super busy, i have so much to do before then. i work full time, homeschool my kid, and my housework along with family life. its the end of the night that gets me. all i can think about. just wish the time would go by faster so i could get it done with. 2 weeks to go. i have my bag packed already and tons of comfy pj's and lots to do when i get home. oh and i know about the mesh panties lol i had to wear them when i had my daughter haha. big hugs, thank you so much! nice to know i have someone that actually knows and understand what im going through.

Re: Getting Scared!

I understand the nervousness! I had three weeks notice before actual surgery date. I stayed busy, did okay, then two days before surgery I got really nervous, thought I would drive myself crazy! I saw my doc the next day for pre op instructions. Talking with him helped me a lot! The morning of surgery I was calm, relaxed, and ready!
