a couple of questions

Hi ladies I am having the da vinci hyst. this coming Friday. My right over and fallopian was removed two years ago to a large ovarian mass that was suspected to be cancer but wasn't. My left ovary has one now and fybroids in my uterus.

I have TERRIBLE PMS or what's called PMDD. My ob wanted me to go on antidepressants...I'm not one to take those. With having a complete hysterectomy and they take my other ovary, will I have and more PMS? I'm assuming no since the ovary remaining will be gone. He suggested putting me on a patch of estrogen low dose to help with the menopausal symptoms. He said I could regulate how much I get. Will this patch cause PMS symptoms? I just never want to feel that way again! 2 to 3 weeks out of four were unbareable! The one week I WASNT in pain was the week of my period.

Other question I'm VERY worried about is weight gain. You hear so many things about it and I'm scared to death of it. My doc said no that doesn't happen, most woman thing it does but only taking in more calories than you should creates that problem.

Thanks for any and all answers!

Re: a couple of questions

You have raised two very good questions. I am not a , so take my opinions and experiences for what they are worth. I do not think that you will continue to have PMS symptoms if you have both ovaries removed and you are in surgical menopause. I had both ovaries removed and while I did not suffer from PMDD, I did have some pretty severe PMS symptoms prior to my surgery. I am on an oral HRT (Premarin) and I do not have any PMS symptoms at all. It is my understanding that PMS actually happens during a hormone fluctuation. When you are on HRT, there is no fluctuation, it is the same dose at all times.

As far as weight gain is concerned, hysterectomies, and HRT do not cause you to gain weight. It is all about how many calories you burn in relation to how many you take in. If you are taking in a bunch of calories during your recovery and you are not as active, it stands to reason that you will put on some weight. That is why it is so important to eat healthy, especially during your recovery. There are a lot of women (me included) that have had diminished appetites since surgery and have actually LOST weight. I am down 35 pounds since my surgery.

to you in your surgery. I hope you find relief after all of this. Remember, take care of yourself and recover well. See you on the other side!!!
