Raspy throat after surgery

I've had a raspy voice since surgery, now 1 week today. Not sore throat, just gravelly as though I can't clear it fully. If I remember the doctor correctly, this might take a few weeks? I've been drinking lots of tea with licorice root and sucking on slippery elm throat lozenges. They soothe alright but I'm getting frustrated. Anyone else?

Re: Raspy throat after surgery

It took me about 2 1/2 weeks to get rid of my sore throat, I was told it was from the tube they put down our throats when we are under, I think they must scrape it when they put it in or out, mine felt like i had a piece of hanging skin or something in there. It bothered me so much but it's all good now, hang in there.

Re: Raspy throat after surgery

It's from the tube during surgery. It can happen after any surgery where a breathing tube is inserted. Mine lasted a few days, but my dad's lasted about two and a half months.

I know you don't want to hear that, but it does bet better in time. Hang in there.

Re: Raspy throat after surgery

Thank you so much for the replies. As long as this will get better. I was beginning to feel panicky. Guess now's the time to practice "listening" more to others rather than interacive conversation! Anything food wise you might recommend eating- and even NOT eating (like no dairy?) -to help it along? As mentioned, I'm already drinking good teas.

Re: Raspy throat after surgery

I couldn't talk at all for the first couple of days and my voice has been weird for 5 weeks now. The sore throat didn't last long, but I think my vocal cords were directly affected by that pesky tube.

It is gradually getting better, but it will be some time before I can teach or speak publicly again (both things I do as aprt of my job). A friend recommended getting a referral to a voice specialist who can prescribe voice exercises and check the vocal chords. I plan to do this if it's still not back to normal in the next 2 weeks. If yours is slow to recover, perhaps you could look into this option too?
