12.5 hours to go... son is scared. :-(

I'm due in at 6:00 a.m. for surgery at 8:00. My 18 yr old is driving me & staying until I am awake, admitted & settled in. My 15 yr old will be at school taking the already stress inducing standardized testing & worrying about me. He's scared. He wants to be sure I'm going to wake up. He wants to know I'll be ok. We met with his therapist tonight & talked about it. All I can do is try to reassure him, but we've always been very connected & he's anxious because he can feel that I am anxious. I've tried to be honest with him about my nerves & fears, but in an appropriate way & letting him know that it is natural & normal to be nervous about these things, but my surgeon is the top in her field & my hospital is the best in town & the entire team is experienced & professional & will take good care of me.

I just wish there was more to do to help him have a stress free day tomorrow. :-/

Re: 12.5 hours to go... son is scared. :-(

I feel for you. I am 10 days post op and my 2 older children were very nervous for me (my youngest is 3yr and he had no clue). I did send them to school the day of the surgery and they told me being in school did keep their minds off of what was going on. I did promise to have my husband email the teachers to tell them when I was out. This really put them at ease. You can reassure your son that this procedure is very common and you're in good hands. GL tomorrow!

Thank you! Yes, I am having my older son call the school so someone can get a message to him once I'm out. They allow them to have their phones usually & we could just shoot a quick text, but due to standardized testing this week they are taking phones & ipods & leaving them at teacher's desk as soon as they walk into advisory. I'm about to send his counselor an email so she is aware that he needs to receive this message right away, regardless of the testing.
