Did hysterectomy make your bowel issues better or worse?

I am hoping hysterectomy will resolve the exrcutiatingly painful episodes of diarrhoea that I have been suffering. However I am very fearful that further surgery might lead to more adhesions and an even greater problem. At this stage I suffer with these episodes every one to two weeks usually associated with my cycle, e.g., premenstrual, day 4-5 and mid cycle. They come on very suddently and severely which has caused problems with my work. I am concerned about stories I read of women with adhesions having an even greater problem after hysterectomy.

I would really like to hear from other women who went into their hysterectomy with adhesions. Did your hyster resolve bowel issues or make them worse?

Re: Did hysterectomy make your bowel issues better or worse?

Hi, I haven't had my hysterectomy yet, that's tomorrow. I have celiac disease and recently saw my gastroenterologist and mentioned that I was having this and thought that maybe it would resolve some issues of the bowel as well. But, he said that it would not, those areas are not connected. Although it is not going to get better it should also not get any worse as like I said they are not related areas. Hope this helps?

Re: Did hysterectomy make your bowel issues better or worse?

For years, my general doc thought I suffered from IBS. Each month, I would get extremely constipated and mid-period, it would then turn into diarrhea, followed by pellet stools and finally, soft thin ribbon-like before correcting itself to 'normal.' They had me change diets and drink more water, add fiber, etc. NOTHING helped. It's been a good decade of this...

The last few months were constantly like this, not just cycle related. I had TAH last Thursday with removal of L ovary and tube as well. My uterus had fibroids and my symptoms were blamed on those. But once the surgeon got into my abdomen, there were massive adhesions and my L ovary was the size of a baseball and fused to my bowels. My L tube was twisted all over the place as well. The surgeon unstuck everything...and guess what? A Fiber One bar, a bowl of oatmeal and 3 glasses of Metamucil later...normal BM. I had the surgery mid-period and was constipated when I went in, so of course the idea of being constipated with an abdominal incision terrified me. I took precautions and expected explosive diarrhea and cramps, but instead, have had now 4 regular movements, all painless (except for the pressure on the incision, that's kind of unavoidable right now) and no pushing, straining or cramping like usual. A fluke? I don't think so. I think my bowels were affected this whole time but it was never caught on ultrasound. The adhesions were cutting off my colon on the L side, worse each month as my cycle progressed. By the time I finally got in for surgery, it was a constant issue as the adhesions were just getting worse and worse, possibly from all the straining I had to do just to pass anything. At least, that's what I think. My doctor says we'll discuss it more at my post-op in 2 weeks, but she's shocked at how much better I look and act already, so...who knows?

For me, it has solved more issues than it has created...so far. Hoping the same for you

Re: Did hysterectomy make your bowel issues better or worse?

I, too have had major GI problems that have worsened with my cycles. Nothing seemed to help the constipation and diarrhea that would hurt me each month. I hoped beyond hope that this surgery would at least help my poor tummy.

Well, I am 6 days post op and besides the gas pains and small amount of constipation I had right after surgery, my bowels seem to be working much better. I have still been taking the stool softeners and drinking small amounts of prune juice... but when I have to go things are moving "normally."

I hope that this improvement sticks!!! Good luck to you and your tummy... lol!!

Re: Did hysterectomy make your bowel issues better or worse?

My hysterectomy (3/7) has definitely improved my bowels! I had multiple giant fibroids that were pressing on my intestines. By the end of the day I was miserable. The gas, bloating and pain was horrible.

Since surgery I'm still trying to find my new 'normal' and for the most part it's all good. The bloating & pressure is gone. One happy hystersister here!

Re: Did hysterectomy make your bowel issues better or worse?

I am three weeks post-op from TAH, and I sm having some issues with my incision, but my bowel issues have been resolved! They were asleep after surgery for about 5 days, but now I am doing great in that department. Every morning I have my two cups of coffe and my bowl of oatmeal w/ blueberries and like clockwork.....well you know, it's great! I was diagnosed with IBS before surgery. Couldn't eat things like cereal with added fiber or I would be in complete pain with gas and constapated like crazy. Now I can eat things like fiber one bars and be completely fine. I even ate chili on Sunday and felt great. Yea!

Re: Did hysterectomy make your bowel issues better or worse?

I haven't had my surgery yet, but my doctor seems pretty sure that a hysterectomy will solve my bowel problems. I've always had diarrhea with my periods. Always, since I was 12. But now, since my 3rd c-section, I've started having cramps when I'm not on my period and diarrhea is accompanying these cramps. My doctor says that sounds like a uterus issue rather than a hormonal one or GI one. She thinks removal of my uterus will solve this problem for me. My doctor tends to be super conservative when it comes to telling me what the hysterectomy will solve. I think I'm having frequent urination due to my enlarged uterus pressing on my bladder, but my doctor told me not to expect the hyster to solve my bladder woes. She says my frequency could just be from having 3 kids. So, when she tells me she thinks the hyster will solve my bowel issues, I believe her.
