Bowel Prep...what if you have IBS?

I have irritable bowel...which means I "go" alot...like maybe 10 times a day. Sometimes diareaha. But it is normal, it is my way of life. I just left my pre-op and anesthesia appts...they told me to get magnesium citrate and drink it the evening b4 my surgery. My question was/is...if I "go" all the time anyways...is this really necessary? Won't it make my diareaha worse? It's just a laxative, right? I don't think my Gyno believed me when I said I 'go" that much. I'm tempted to just forgo the magnesium citrate. Opinions anyone???

Re: Bowel Prep...what if you have IBS?

Yes, it will make your diarrhea worse. Some dr's require the bowel to be totally clean, and even if you have the runs all the time, that doesnt mean your bowel is empty. I would not forgo the CM because they will ask you if you did it and your surgery will probably be cancelled if they know you didnt do it. You want your bowel totally clean in case it is damaged during surgery

uggg....ok. I just kept telling her I poop allll the time anyways and she said...well you might be constipated. Uh...NO...I never am. Just the oposite. But I sure dont want not taking the stuff to be a reason for cancelling it lol

TealBait: I too have IBS and totally understand what you are saying. I told my dr about how I have IBS and what it means for me but he like buttercream said you need to make sure your bowl is empty it has to be. So I am just going to take it and be prepared for the storm. I think a good book might be in order. :/

Re: Bowel Prep...what if you have IBS?

I'm wondering if your stools are that loose then will the cleanse work quicker and maybe easier? I have colitis, so I know what you are talking about. I didn't have to do the cleanse for the hyster but I have done it for a colonoscopy. You are right about a book and stay very close th the bathroom.

Re: Bowel Prep...what if you have IBS?

I have worked myself up over it and now...here at work tonight...have accidently given myself a "bowel prep" in the form of diareaha lol. Funny how the surgery and recovery is not bothering me...but the fact I am PURPOSELY gonna make myself have 'the scours" as my Mom used to call it...it is making me nervous as can be!!! Because when I get IBS diareaha...it is RUNrunRUN to a bathroom...and sometimes I still dont make it. What in sam Hill is this bowel prep gonna do to me??LOL

Re: Bowel Prep...what if you have IBS?

This part bothered me long before I developed IBS. Now that I have IBS... oh man, I can't even imagine!

Re: Bowel Prep...what if you have IBS?

I have IBS also, my doc never gave a bowel prep but I don't believe that I would have done it as I go several times a day. I don't even need to take all the prep before a colonscopy.

I did not have a BM for 5 days after surgery but passed gas and was not that uncomfortable. I nornally take meds everyday for the IBS but did not for a few days following surgery. Once I did have a BM it was a long day, and took a couple of days to return to "normal".

Hope this helps!

Re: Bowel Prep...what if you have IBS?

I would try talking to your doctor again. I too have IBS but I alternate between constipation and diarrhea. Because of my IBS I was permitted to skip the bowel prep. I just had to fast after midnight. I had a BM on day 2 after surgery and about 5 times everday for a week. I have settled down to a happy norm of 2 BMs a day (miracles do happen). But I warn you, the first week is rough with the diarrhea and gas pains. Nothing you haven't been through before but it will be when you are at your most uncomfortable and getting to the bathroom quickly is not an option unless someone helps you. So be prepared. Best of luck to you!

Re: Bowel Prep...what if you have IBS?

I have decided I will NOT do the bowel prep...mainly because I work till midnight Tuesday...and have to be at the hospital at 6 a.m. Not enuff time for a prep...and I dang sure am NOT gonna do it at work. So I plan on eating light all this week...and liquids on Tuesday. I should be fine...I have had straightup diareaha for two days now. And that is without a prep...so I can only imagine what a prep will do to me. No thanks!!!! One of my friends who just had a TVH did not have to do a prep. And she never poops regular. So if I am a good "goer", I should be fine.
