Reasonable recovery time for LAVH & caring for a toddler?

I had my pre-op visit today & my dr thinks we may be able to do the LAVH instead of the TAH! I am going to need to hire someone to help while my husband is at work. I am trying to figure in advance a roundabout idea of how many weeks I should look for someone to come for. I have been able to line up 3 weeks of help after surgery but am not sure if I should set up another week or 2 now while I can.

I have 2 school aged children (another child who is over 18 & out of the house) & 1 very, very active 2 year old who is almost 40 lbs. My husband has odd work hours and is home by 9:30 am so I would really be home with my 2 year old for about 3 hours.

I do have a lot of other medical problems so when ever I have surgery, it's fair to add on an extra 1-2 weeks to expected recovery time. I need to have back surgery when I'm done with this & am not recovered from knee surgery last year. I am unable to bend one of my knees & walk with a limp. My dr said if she gets in there, there is a possibility I may end up needing the TAH but she really thinks I should be okay with the LAVH.

The big thing is help with my 2 year old. He's almost 40 lbs & does need to be lifted at times. He has some special needs & does not cooperate for diaper changes. There is some serious wrestling involved there. My dr told me directly, do not lift your son for minimum 8 weeks & the first 4 weeks is going to be difficult.

Right now, it's looking like I am able to line up help for 3 weeks after the surgery. After that there will be that 3 hour period in the morning when I'm by myself with my son. I'm trying to figure if I should definitely find help or if I may be able to manage for a couple of hours before my husband gets home. I'm just worried if my son has a bad diaper (which he often does in the mornings), will I be able to change that? Between my back & knee pain, plus the lower abdominal pain, there are days already where careing for him is do-able but very painful.

Thank you!

Re: Reasonable recovery time for LAVH & caring for a toddler?

I'm thinking if all goes well you *should* be ok for a few hours by then. I would see if there is anyone you could have "on call" just in case your surgery doesn't go as planned, or healing takes a curve ball. I'd just have diapers/wipes set up in an easy to reach spot, and have your toddler lay on your lap or on say the sofa to change him. Have him take the diaper to the trash can, etc. I can't give you an exact idea of what happened here because we home school and my 11 year old was at home to help out a lot.

Re: Reasonable recovery time for LAVH & caring for a toddler?

I had a TAH, and can honestly say that if yours gets converted to one, you will want help another week or two past the three you already have scheduled. I have a 4 yo girl and 2yo boy at home. He is very, very active!! I am currently at 5 weeks post op and still need a little help with them when my husband is gone and my older kids are at school. I mistakenly tried to change his diaper by myself last week and my incision opened a little. That has set me back awhile. If you can schedule help, do it. Best case scenario, you can cancel if you don't need it.
Good luck!
