12 more days to go, getting more scared as days go by

I am having a total hysterectomy on the 17th due to cervical cancer and also fibroids. When my doctor suggested we do the hysterectomy I was ok with it because it meant that I would be healthy again, but now as the time is getting nearer I am getting more and more nervous. I have a two year old and a miracle 3 month old and I"m worried about having the help I will need, and I am also worried about the pain, and how long I will be in pain. when I was 14 weeks pregnant I had 2 hernia surgeries, is it compareable to that? I am getting more and more anxious as the time gets closer. Another thing that has me stressed is that I could possibly (unsure if they are taking the ovaries or not) go into menopause before I am even 30. What is it like?

Re: 12 more days to go, getting more scared as days go by

Hi there. I had a TAH (kept ovaries so can't say about the menopause) four weeks ago. I had 6 surgeries before that one and I gotta say that no other surgery really compares. Not so much pain-wise; that is pretty much the same as any abdominal surgery. Plus they give you good drugs so that you are always comfortable. The big difference is how long it takes you to recover. You don't bounce back from this one it takes the full 6-8 weeks to recover. Having said that, the pain doesn't last long but you will be uncomfortable for awhile (3 weeks for me).

As for needing help: you will need a lot of help. Marshal the troops now. Friends, family, whoever but you will be down for the count the first week. Only able to go to the bathroom, shower, and eat. The second week is a little better than the first in terms of discomfort but your energy takes a long time to come back.

As for the menopause, you should really talk to your GYN. Have you discussed what you will do in the event that they take your ovaries? You are young to lose your ovaries and might need HRT. I don't know your medical history so my suggestion is to discuss it with your doc and decide whether you're going to keep them, etc. This is something you need to be clear on and well informed. This site is has a wealth of info, so check out some of the articles on ovaries. I wish you the best!

First, I am sorry about the cancer diagnosis. You will have strict lifting restrictions for about 6 weeks. It is important for your healing that you follow these instructions. That means you need help with toddler and baby. Also, is your doc going to let you do HRT? If not be prepared for hot flashes and weepiness. Freeze some meals that are easy to warm up. Best of luck!

Re: 12 more days to go, getting more scared as days go by

It is normal for you to become more nervous and emotional as your surgery date approaches. The occasional total freakout is also normal. You are not alone in this! We are here to help you and see you through this.

Mathwiz is right - this is unlike any surgery I have had. The level of fatigue is extreme. Showering and getting to the couch is a big accomplishment. Walking a short distance will be exhausting. This will be for the first two weeks, maybe more.

You will need help with your little ones, you will also need help cooking, dishes, cleaning, shopping, driving, etc. You also wont be able to lift more than 10 lbs for six weeks.
