TVH questions re car ride home and recovery

TVH with A&P repair and bladder sling coming my way on 4/18. Wondering about the car ride home...about 1-1/2 hr....can you sit for that long?? Donut cushion? Or will I be too drugged to care?

Also, during recovery would a belly binder be helpful even though no abdominal incision?

I am a little concerned because this is outpatient

Thanks

Sandy

Re: TVH questions re car ride home and recovery

I'll admit one of the worst parts of my hyster was the ride home but DH managed to take the long way over particularly bumpy roads.

Take your pain meds just before leaving the hospital, have a small pillow handy to put between you and the seat belt and avoid the bumps. It isn't all that bad! On a smooth road I would have been fine.

I didn't use a binder and didn't need one but then I didn't have A&P repairs. I used a pillow pressed on my tummy when I coughed or sneezed (ouch!) but no binder.

I was wondering the same thing. I have the same thing scheduled for May 9th but my drive will be 7 hrs. Should I fly instead?? Thoughts

I don't understand, why so far to go for a surgery? Guess I should be thankful that my hospital is only a couple miles down the street. If I have problems with that ride home, I have PROBLEMS. Hang in there ladies!

Re: TVH questions re car ride home and recovery

I had my TVH in July. I'm surprised you're having yours as an outpatient, as I was admitted for two nights. I live an hour from hospital. The drive home was painful and tiring but doable. You will need to hold the seat belt off your belly and it helps if you recline the seat back. Leave the hospital 20 minutes after your pain meds.

Trixie I would definitely consider flying rather than a 7 hour drive.

Re: TVH questions re car ride home and recovery

I had a TVH on March 27th and my surgery was 5 hours from home but the drive with stopping took about 6 hours. The drive went well except for the time that my mom decided to try and cause an accident LOL. But I was ok; I took the highest recommended dose of pain pills before we left, and I did have a tummy pillow. I did not get a belly binder because I had not incisions either, and really dont know if it would have helped with the ride home, but I wish I would have had it for sleeping on the couch at home, I am a side or tummy sleeper so this where I think it would have helped. But I made it work fine with a pillow that went under my tummy and down between my knees.

I didn't get the binder either. Just as well as my tummy was so sore I never would have been able to use it. I couldn't have anything around my waist for weeks after surgery.

7hr away is where I was referred. It is the closest place. We are pretty rural.
