Open incision with internal stitch poking out!

I am 15 days post op! My belly button incision opened up on me and they did not want to close due to infection coming out. My doc did stitch it up but I used peroxide to clean it and it dissolved my stitches he just put in, (I had another thread on that topic). Now, I have an open incision and the end of one of the internal stitches is poking out about a quarter to a half inch. I thought it was puss and then when I pulled on it it pulled back! Now, every time my incision tries to scab over, the stitch tears off the scab. I have to keep it covered most of the time because of my clothes rubbing on it and when I change the bandage, the stitch moves and takes the scab with it. Anyone else had this problem? I just finished a round of Keflex and am still running a low grade fever (100) which is what made the doc put me on the meds to begin with. The ER doc put me on Bactrim to be safe but that stuff makes me sick as a dog no matter if I eat with it or not. I am clueless on this and my checkup isn't until May. I am going to call the nurse in the morning and see what she says but I was hoping someone could shed some light on this subject for me from personal experience. Thanks everyone!

Re: Open incision with internal stitch poking out!

Go see your doctor and have him or her snip it off. I had one and did the same thing you did (pulled on it) and gave myself a minor infection. Keflex took care of the infection asap. In your case you are dealing with an open incision so let your doctor guide you on what is best.

Re: Open incision with internal stitch poking out!

I called my doc on Friday but he was out and the one on call told me to snip it off at skin level. I went home (was at my mom's) and had my hubby do the deed. He looked at it and by this time a knot had worked its way out and you could see the two ends of the stitch going into either side of the incision. I had him cut it above the knot so nothing unravelled in there! LOL It is starting to scab over now but if I move wrong it opens back up. I have to talk to my doc tomorrow about the low grade fever since I am still running one after a round of Keflex. Thanks for the advice!

Open incision with internal stitch poking out!

Thanks for posting this, I do have a small piece sticking out of my incision site but haven't really thought much of it now I know not to pull on it and I might also put a band aid over it to keep it from pulling on my clothes
