Antibodies to what?

No one's mentioned testing for antibodies to me before previous out-patient procedures & surgeries. Interesting. I don't know what this is about, but don't we develop antibodies when we're exposed to an illness, or have an illness (to fight off the illness)? So I'm wondering if they're testing for antibodies for something in particular.
