4 months post op....hair loss

Hi, on December 23rd I had a hysterectomy and kept my overies. For the last few days, every time I run my hand through my hair I get 10-20 strands of hair that come out at the root. My brush fills up quickly with hair when I brush it. I have read it could be related to my hyst. Has anyone else experienced this?

Have you had your thyroid tested or been on any new medication?

Re: 4 months post op....hair loss

My thyroid was tested right before my surgery, and was fine. I am not on any new meds either. I have thick hair but I have never had it fall out like this before.

any other possible menopausal symptoms? You might want to have your thyroid checked again. Things can change after a hyster.

I did that after both of my children were born, just at the four month mark. My doc said to expect it. The anesthetic can have a delayed effect.

Re: 4 months post op....hair loss

Were you under a lot of stress around the time of the surgery? That can be a symptom of post traumatic stress disorder.
Happened to me when I went through something really stressful, 4 months later I had a lot of hair loss, just as you describe.

I was also told that trauma to your body--even a high fever--affects your hair. I lost lots of hair after both my c-sections. And after pnuemonia.

Re: 4 months post op....hair loss

Hi craftycrazylady, I also experienced hair loss months after my hysterectomy. I'm thinking it was from the anesthesia and/or hormonal changes.
I got some "beauty" vitamins from GNC that addressed hair & skin health (the vitapaks) and some anti hair loss shampoo & treatment (Nioxin makes a good range, available at ULTA or ask your hairstylist). After a few months, the hair loss slowed down.
It'll be one year ago for me tomorrow, writing this to you made me think of that. How time flies! My hair has no remaining effects, in fact I liked what the vitamins did for my hair & skin so I still take them.
Good luck to you!
