Does anaesthetic affect mental focus?

Following surgery, the first week, I couldn't focus on much of anything. I'm usually an avid reader, and even two weeks post op I just didn't have the mental focus to enjoy reading. By week 3 I might lay down in the afternoon and if I wasn't sleeping, I'd read a novel and if it wasn't too complicated, I'd follow the plot line. Even now, at almost 5 weeks post-op, my mental focus is not up to par. Has anyone else had this experience, and does anyone know how much this is a result of tiredness or whether this is an after-effect of the anaesthesia?

Re: Does anaesthetic affect mental focus?

My doctor said it could take a month or even two to regain mental focus. If after 2 months your still foggy, I would call your doctor.

Re: Does anaesthetic affect mental focus?

Thanks. I'm steadily improving, but I'm wondering how much it is an after-effect of the anaesthesia and how much is just because my energy is going into healing. I feel pretty normal, but I get mentally tired easily. Good thing I did the taxes before my surgery!

Re: Does anaesthetic affect mental focus?

I too am an avid reader. I'm almost 2 weeks post-op and I can't concentrate for more than a chapter or two. I used to have no problem plopping my butt in a chair and read a whole book in 6 hours. It's so frustrating, I hope it gets better soon!

Re: Does anaesthetic affect mental focus?

It could definitely be an after effect. It can take a few weeks for all of that to get out of your system. I had a horrible time with it. I am also an avid reader and I was really hoping to pass the time during my recovery with a good book....or two...or three. Unfortunately, it didnt happen for me. I also had some vision problems from it too, so everything was blurry for awhile.

It will get better with time though and hopefully soon you will get back to enjoying your books!

Re: Does anaesthetic affect mental focus?

SO glad I saw this post! I thought it was just me lol I'll be 3 weeks post op Thursday and have the same problem. I'd stocked up on magazines and books but for the first week was really glad the magazines had great pictures! Yesterday I was able to read a chapter and actually remembered it today, so that coupled with these posts, assures me I'm not the only one and this to shall pass!!

Re: Does anaesthetic affect mental focus?

Yep...almost at 4 weeks post-op and just now able to focus for small bits of time. It's debilitating, too, because I am FT grad student as well as a FT professional. Argh! Hope it continues to improve...but it's truly slow-going, this

Re: Does anaesthetic affect mental focus?

Same here, I am just over 3 weeks post-op and usually an avid reader, I had stocked up with 10 books, but have only managed to read 1 of them in the last 3 weeks, find I really can't be bothered concentrating on them yet, easier to watch TV, especially the Ellen Show!

Re: Does anaesthetic affect mental focus?

It took me about 2 months to get any mental focus back and then for another month I felt a sort of low key. Now at 3 months, I feel my old energy fully back.

Re: Does anaesthetic affect mental focus?

TSPiper - I didn't do my taxes before hand - thought I would have plenty of time to do them after surgery. Yea right!! Well Needless to say, I filed for an extension.

Hope everyone continues to have a successful recovery.
