So scared!!!

I am scheduled for a TAH on May 23rd. I have never been so scared in my life. I have fibroids, that are causing severe anemia. I have already had 2 blood transfusions, and need 2 more before surgery. I am not in any pain. I kind of wish i was, I think it would make going for surgery a little bit easier. I am scared of waking up in horrible pain, and the meds wont work, I am scared of coming home is paid. I am just SCARED!! Scared doesnt even sound strong enough for what I am feeling. I am crying myself to sleep, every second I am awake I am totally consumed by this. I have never had any type of surgery before. I am 41 and have 4 children and 1 grandchild. I want to just cancel everything and say forget it. But I know I shouldnt do that. Am I just being a big baby, or is this normal??

Re: So scared!!!

It's normal to feel scared. Surgery is a big deal, but I'm sure you have the best medical team working together to get you well. I know you want to get well also. It will be alright. We're here to support eachother.

Take care of yourself and see you in the post-op forum.

Re: So scared!!!

I think what you are experiencing is normal. I'm 10 days PO and really doing fine. I'm taking it easy and letting everyone help. The pain I experienced was completely manageable with the meds that they prescribed for me and I have been able to cut back and go to a non-narcotic already. Just keep checkin' in here for support and big hugs! You're not alone! Praying God will grant you peace and rest as you await your big day. Hugs!

Re: So scared!!!

You will be just fine. The pain is there but it is manageable. It is okay to be scared but don't let it consume you. You have a while yet so keep yourself busy by spring cleaning and getting your home recovery area ready. Read the pre op posts and advice and don't read the post op stuff until after surgery. I will be praying for you and your surgeons and I have a feeling you will be happy that you did this when it is over. I know I sure am.

Re: So scared!!!

I am now 4 days before surgery. I am also very scared but I begged for this to be done to end my pain. I also have fibroids but have not had the trasnfusions but have been told that they would be in my future. I am scared of my recovery due to have small children at home. My oldest 2 are 5 and my youngest is 11 months. They are not going to understand why mommy cant take them for walks and play on the floor. But I am very sure that we will both wake up post op and the fear be less and then 6 weeks post op be very thankful that we did what was best for ourselves so we can continue with a normal and happy life with our family and children. I will be praying that you can find some peace while you wait.

Re: So scared!!!

I am 5 days post op and I was terrified! I had fibroids, cysts, bladder polyp, bladder repair and scar tissue removal. The pain is manageable and will be worth it in the end. No more uncontrolled bleeding, worrying about if you leak, caring extra clothes just in case. The bleeding was running my life out was all I thought about. You will be fine we will help you through

Re: So scared!!!

I am 10 days post op and was absolutely terrified before my surgery. I think it is completely normal to be afraid of the unknown and to conjure up a whole bunch of what if scenarios. It was pointless to tell me not to worry prior because I was going to worry regardless. Just know you are doing what is best for you.

Re: So scared!!!

Thanks for the encouragement. I see most of you have been vaginal hysterectomies. I would feel much better if I was able to have that done. But due to the size of my uterus that is not an option. I have to have a abdominal cut. I know those are a lot worse and have a much longer healing time.

Re: So scared!!!

Hi, I am 3 days post op. I had a TAH (kept left ovary and tube). I was also very, very scared. To the point of not sleeping well, crying A LOT, etc. I believe that the fear is perfectly normal and natural. I think that I would of been more concerned if I wasn't scared.
Yes, there is pain involved.... However, it i manageable with the pain meds. Standing up, sitting down and coughing are the worst, but, again, the pain meds help and you start to get use to it and devise your own ways of lessening the pain. I've been relying heavily on my upper body to do most of the work when I stand or sit. Use a pillow for coughing.
You are going to do great and be great!!!!!
