post op advice for swelling

I am 3 days post op emergency TVH with some complications. I'm home now with significant lower abdominal and vulvar swelling. Has anyone experienced that and how long should I expect it. Thank you

Re: post op advice for swelling

My belly is still swollen almost 3 weeks post op. After the first week it went down quite a bit, but it's still swollen. It seems to swell more in the evening and night too.

Re: post op advice for swelling

The first few days after surgery my lower abdominal swelled up because I couldn't go to the bathroom. I finally pooped on the 5th day after surgery and it made me feel a lot easier. I still swell up off and on though because of gas. I take Gas-X when it swells up or use a heating pad and that helps with the swelling.

For the vulvar swelling, I would call your doctor to make sure that it's not something he needs to check out.

Well that's a little discouraging but thank you for the feedback. Even my sweat pants are uncomfortable, ugh.

Anyone take lasix?

Re: post op advice for swelling

Have you had a BM yet? I swear I looked like I was 9 months pregnant until I had my first BM.

I couldn't wear anything but really loose pants until then either. After that I could wear pants that were a little tighter but still had to be really comfortable. Today (Post-op Day 18) is the first day I was able to wear jeans and they're stretchy jeans.

Don't take laxix unless your surgeon tells you to. I don't think we are supposed to try to get rid of the swelling. It is a necessary part of healing.and we just need to make ourselves comfortable and go with the flow.Dehydrating yourself to reduce swelling isn't healthy. You need lots of water to heal.

Me too! I am 7 weeks post op and I still swell in the evening. I also gained 7 lbs! But I am able to exercise a little now and the weight is coming off, but the swelling still happens. I notice that drinking tea helps a lot. Good luck.

Re: post op advice for swelling

Have you been sitting a lot? They say initially not to sit, if you can, walking & lying flat are the best. I am 7 weeks post op & still have a little swelling & can't wear a belt or anything fitted. Best wishes!!

Re: post op advice for swelling

That was all helpful, thank you all. I'm doing so much better. I am spending a lot of time in pajama bottoms or sweats though. Can't imagine trying to get into a pair of jeans or normal pants but each days seams a little better. Post op day 8 today and I'm grateful for my hyster sisters on this site.
