Re: LIFETIME restrictions on lifting (vs recovery time)

My instructions were to never ever lift any more than 10kg. (about 20lbs). I got a cold 6 months after my repair and I am pretty sure I felt my repair fail at that point (cough or a sneeze). I think my repair failed because I was one of the 30-70% of plications that fail within 5 years. I think my repair failed because the procedure simply does not result in a durable repair. A cough or a sneeze puts much more pressure on your pelvic floor than lifting 10kg ever will. If a repair can't take that, it's not really a repair at all.
If I had known then what I know now, I would not have chosen a surgeon who uses this approach to repairs. I have now found a surgeon who uses a porcine graft.

Re: LIFETIME restrictions on lifting (vs recovery time)

Cali2, most of the women who have lifetime restrictions are those who have had other repairs in addition to their hysterectomy. We have members who are nurses who have to lift adult patients and are able to go back to work with no problems. Best advice is to follow your doctor's instructions regarding lifting.

Re: LIFETIME restrictions on lifting (vs recovery time)

When I had my hysterectomy I was only told about the normal lifting post op., but after my hernia repairs, and bladder/bowel being tacked back up that I could never lift over 20lbs. Dr. told me to take it easy even lifting that. Of course I have had recurrent hernia repairs. Good luck, and ask your dr. why he is giving you these restrictions.
