Back to work pain - any tips for desk work?

Dear sisters,

I am over 9 weeks post op and went back to work last week after getting an extension. I have 2 jobs, both mostly desk-based, and both employers have agreed to let me work short days for a couple of weeks (thank god!).

I am finding it very painful sitting at a desk. I have been getting up and walking at regular intervals, use a back support cushion and am doing a max 5 hour day. But the pain is so bad in the evening all I can do is lie down. At the weekend I even took codeine again which seems like a massive step backwards. My pain has never reduced enough for me to stop taking painkillers altogether though, and I am awaiting an appointment for post-op physio.

I walk and use public transport to get to work, and am also struggling with carrying my work bag. I only pack what I need for a day at work (diary, umbrella, lunch), but I think the weight of my bag is not helping either.

Does anyone have any tips? I really thought I'd be pain free by now, and back to full time hours but I can't even imagine either of these at the moment. And it's getting me down to think all my free time will be spent recovering.

Thanks,

Emily

Re: Back to work pain - any tips for desk work?

I am 12 days post op, da vinci. I returned to work yesterday doing light duty which means sitting at the desk doing lab call backs and nurse calls for 8 hours. I keep my feet propped up as much as I can. I do good in the mornings but after lunch and on into the afternoons I am wore out. My belly is more sore than before returning to work. I have taken pain med at night for 3 nights now, just to help ease the pain. I don't really have any tips for you, just wanted to let you know you're not alone. I too would appreciate any tips someone may have.

Re: Back to work pain - any tips for desk work?

MissEuk, I can totally relate! I'm almost 5 months post op &I have a desk job too. I wish I had the answer. I get up often and walk around. I also find it helpful to put my feet up on my desk and type from my lap. I have a private office . By mid afternoon my belly is sore & swelled & I can't wait to get home and stretch out on the floor. I've been doing some swimming and light pelvic tilts in the hopes of strengthening my abs. A heating pad helps at night. I too thought I'd be pain free by now. Hopefully others can offer advice!!

Re: Back to work pain - any tips for desk work?

Wow. I will be four weeks tomorrow, I went back to my desk job half days yesterday. I have been soooo tired after about an hour. I was hoping I would be better after getting into routine for a couple of days. This thread is not giving me hope.

Re: Back to work pain - any tips for desk work?

I am in my 5th week and should be going back to worn in 1 more week. I'm also worried about sitting at my desk all day after driving 1.5 hours to get to work. As it is I get very sore by the afternoon and my belly starts to swell. I purchased a pair of spandex panties hoping that this may help with the swelling. I too am not getting much hope from this tread.
