Catheter problem

I came home from surgery with a catheter. I am scheduled to have it removed tomorrow afternoon. Now when I pee, it comes out of my body, not into the catheter tubing. I don't know if I should attempt to remove it myself, go to the ER or just hang tight until tomorrow. Anyone had this problem before?

Re: Catheter problem

I had a cath..but did not have that problem. I would call your doctor about it because there was a reason for that cath. Don't remove it because you might cause an even bigger problem. I would call.....and maybe head to the ER. They are equipped to handle this.

Just got mine out after 3 weeks of one being in. Good luck....

Re: Catheter problem

I could pee small amounts when I had my supra pubic catheter. What kind of catheter do you have? One that comes out of your urethra or one that comes out of your side? I would always recommend you call your dr if you have questions.

Re: Catheter problem

I did have this problem. I went to the ER and they removed it. Please go and let us know how your doing. Never attempt to remove it because it has a balloon inside to keep you from pulling it out. The nurse told me that it will be extremely painful if you do it yourself.

Re: Catheter problem

I went to the ER last night and they removed it. I knew how to remove it myself but wasn't going to chance damaging all of the work my doctor spent 4 hours on. They said there may have been a blockage in there or so much swelling went down that pee was escaping. Either way, I'm peeing like a champ again.

Re: Catheter problem

I came home with a cath as well, for 8 days, and did great after they removed it. Just made me really nervous, and I think it set me back recovery time wize, but doing fine now. Hardest part for me is to relax and know that this all takes time. I am a want it yesterday person.

Re: Catheter problem

I am the same way. I am so use to going going going, and now that I have to stop and rest, I dont know how, but Im figuring out that I need to. The catheter has certainly saved me.

Re: Catheter problem

Glad to hear everything worked out (no pun intended) alright! I was going to advise NOT to try to pull it out yourself -- like another poster said, there's a small balloon at the end that can really damage your urethra if the cath is pulled out before the balloon is drained. But it's a moot point now . . . best wishes for your continued recovery!
