Being Shaved

I'm just curious as to how much shaving of the pubic area is done for a TAH. Is it done before you're put out? Could you do it yourself that morning at home?

I WONDER...

IF IT WOULD BE THE SAME!!!

WHEN I WENT IN FOR THE FIRST TIME, (HYSTERECTOMY) I DIDN'T REMEMBER BEING SHAVED BEFORE, SO I WOULD THINK THEY DID IT AFTER I WAS OUT!!!

GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!!

? Shaving

I've worked in a hospital for 17 years and have prepared many patients for surgery. Some doctor's even prefer that their patients do not get shaved at all, thinking that the shaving can be a cause of a post op infection. As a nurse, and having been shaved and prepped for a c/s with my first child, the pubic hair growing back is incredibly uncomfortable, very itchy. So now when a doctor orders a shave for the patient, I shave just enough for the incision. Some women have very little hair and others of course require more shaving. Some patients get shaved while they are still awake and others request it be done once they are under anesthesia. So, ask your doc if she has her patients shaved or not. As a professional, I at least think it is a cleaner incision line when the patient has been shaved around the incision rather than to have the hair sewn in with the repair work. You also might want to request that the foley catheter be placed once you are under anesthesia, for me it was uncomfortable the first time I had it put in and of course embarrassing, so when I had my abdominal hyst, I had the shave and foley done while I slept. Good Luck, but talk to your doctor and anesthesia doctor and get the answers you need before your surgery. The doctor is working for you! Your the boss.

Being Shaved

Kodiakid,

I did the honors before surgery.. when we were all in the operating room I mentioned giddily (almost under) that I could now wear a brazilian bikini because I shaved myself the night before. I then asked if there was any way they could LIFT the rear just a bit to fit INTO the bikini!!!! The Doctors said they got a kick out that one! Kristy

I'm sure we'll all have different replies to this one....

I have shaved for many years....sometimes all, sometimes just bikini shaves. I used to get it all waxed off. Geez, those California women, huh? LOL!

Anyway, when I went for my pre-op at the hospital, I asked the nurse that gave me all the skinny on everything if I could just shave myself and she readily said, "Sure!" I am so used to doing it that it's just second nature to me. AND, I have found (through other messages on this site) that the hand cream/lotion idea when it begins to grow out is FABULOUS! I am a woman who happens to have a very ample amount of hair "there" so if the lotion works for me, it should work for many.

Just my $.02.

Being Shaved

Hi,

I had TAH/BSO on 1/11/02. At my pre-op the nurses told me not to shave myself. They were concerned about any nicks or cuts that could cause infection. The nurses shaved me about an inch below the incision once I was in dreamland.

Best wishes to everyone with upcoming surgeries and happy healing to the rest!

WOW! I was just coming here to post this same question. I'm going to ask the dr. Wednesday if he will be wanting me shaved, and if I can myself. The other times I've been shaved in the hospital they have done it dry or with not enough lubrication, and then I get sore.

CindyO,

I missed the tip about the hand cream. Can you pass it on? Thanks.
