what is a myomectomy ?

A myomectomy is the surgical removal of fibroids without removing the uterus. I think there are several methods used. I'm sure there are women on this site who have had this done and can tell you more.

what is a myomectomy ?

I had a myomectomy with uterine suspension for my fibroids several years ago. As Laura said, it's a procedure where the fibroids are removed (with a laser, or surgically) and the uterus remains. It can be done abdominally or laproscopically, depending on the size and location of the broids.

I chose to try it because at that time I was trying to conceive. It seemed like a good alternative. I was 37 at the time. I have to say it was a very hard surgery and recovery for me...so much so that I put off the hyster too long because of that experience.

Unless you are post-menopausal, it's extremely likely that your fibroids may grow back (mine did, with a vengeance) which will leave you facing more surgery. JMHO, but if you are finished with your family or not planning one, I'd skip a myomectomy. That said, it can be a good alternative if you have a compelling reason to hang on to your uterus. I'm not a doctor...this is just my own opinion based on my own experience. But I'll wager that most women who have a myo end up with the hyster anyway.

An interesting note....my hyster was WAY less painful and my recovery far less uncomfortable than the myo. It's actually a less traumatic surgery.

Hope that helps a bit?

Karen
