pre-op w/rheumatoid arthritis

I am currently awaiting the surgeon appointment to decide the date of my hysterectomy. In addition to having a very enlarged uterus due to fibroids and a missing right ovary, I have suffered with endometriosis since I was a teenager (I am now 33). I am currently recovering from a car accident (great timing!) and have had very active rheumatoid arthritis for 4 years that was worsened by the trauma of the accident. While the 5-6 hours of physical therapy a week is keeping me moving, the endo crept back in and asserted itself-hopefully the removal of the inflammation will have some good effect on the arthritis-anyone have any experience with an autoimmune disease and the healing from a hysterectomy?

Hi...I am sorry to hear about all your problems. I really can't answer your question, but wanted to pop in to welcome you and tell you that I'm sure someone will be along who can answer your question. In the meantime, you may want to do a search. Just click on the purple search button at the top of the page and type in rheumatoid arthritis and you may come up with some info from other posts.

You will be in my thoughts and prayers! s

re: rheumatoid arthritis

I also have RA along with another autoimmune connective tissue disease. My rheumatologist said my healing time after surgery will be a little slower because of my sjogrens syndrome. He did not seem to think that the RA would slow down the healing process that much.. but the inactivity would probly make me a little more uncomfortable. I'm sorry.. I know this is not much of an answer. You might try calling you rheumatologist and ask him if your specific stage in RA is going to be a hinder. Also some meds may slow down the healing process, so maybe you can discuss this with both of your s and make for sure. Also ask which meds you need to stop before surgery and when to resume them. One of my meds must be stopped 2 weeks prior to surgery and started again 1 week after. The other meds can be stopped 3 days before surgery and resumed the day after.
Best of luck!!!!
