Valium, Xanax, or. . .?

I have my preops tomorrow and I want to ask for something to help me with anxiety, for at least the night before surgery. I've taken Xanax a couple of times and didn't feel that it did much for me. I took Valium once and ditto. Do you think the pills worked but I just didn't realize it? or is there something with a little more umph?

Thanks!

Valium, Xanax, or. . .?

Hi kodiakid ,
You might want to ask your doctor about this...I am not sure what they can give you. Perhaps they would give you a larger dose or a sleep aide.
Best wishes to you

It definately doesn't hurt to ask. Just let your dr know what you just told us about the others not helping. I didn't even think to ask my dr for something for the night before. Wish I did because I was so nervous and excited at the same time that I didn't sleep a wink the night before. Thank goodness my surgery was early in the morning & the anestheologist got me to sleep then.

Valium, Xanax, or. . .?

I really regret not asking the doc for something to help me sleep the night before surgery. I didn't sleep at all! I tossed and turned all night long...it was awful. I told my doc before they took me into surgery that I didn't sleep a wink the night before & he said "Why didn't you ask for something?!". Do yourself a favor and ask for something. You will be glad you did.

I didn't sleep the first night in the hospital either. I wanted so badly to sleep and couldn't. It was another rough night. The second night I asked for a sleeping pill. They gave me a tiny little pill called Ambien. I slept for 5 hours straight that night. It was wonderful!

Best of luck to you!

Valium, Xanax, or. . .?

There are things that your doctor can give you that are stronger. The two drugs you mentioned do not do a thing for me . All you have to do is ask there are other medications out there.

Benadryl

I asked my doc for something to help me sleep the night before my surgery, and she advised me to take two Benadryl. It's true, they really do conk me right out! In the end, I actually had no trouble sleeping, (I had been using a relaxation - guided visualization tape) so I didn't try it.
