Questions about ovarian cancer...

A little history... I'm 31, will be 32 in April, have 2 kids(girls, ages 9 and 5)both deliveries were by c-section and had a tubal ligation in 1997. All was fine until about 6 months or so after the tubal I started having problematic periods, severe, knifelike pain in my left pelvic region that would come on about a week before my period and then would get so bad when my period started that it would land me in bed with the heating pad, on extra strength tylenol(doesn't help)and if I fell asleep, I was lucky to get some relief. I don't know why I'm talking like this is "past tense", lol, I am still suffering from this. Anyways, I finally had a laparoscopic procedure done in October of 2001 where my right ovary was found to be engulphed in adhesions, but the left ovary was fine. A DnC was also performed at the time and that tissue was biopsied and came back normal. I WAS going to have a TAH on Jan. 31, but felt I should really try something else before I go ahead with that as I just couldn't find a true peace with that route. BTW, my OB/GYN is pretty positive that I have adenomyosis, so I'm starting on BC pills tomorrow and will see if they can help with the bleeding and pain... K, for my question.. When my doctor did that lap in October, would he have been able to tell if there was any cancer present of my ovaries? The reason I ask this is because I do get some of the classic symtoms of that particular disease. I get bloated, but it goes away, I have abdominal pain on and off, I have IBS, I get sharp shooting pains in my lower abdomen sometimes, too. I haven't asked for a CA125 blood test. Should I ask for this? I tend to be a hypochondriac at times, but I am worried about ovarian cancer only because of my symptoms, although I know they can be caused by many other things, too, I'm sure. I'm having an MRI done on Thursday morning to see if they can diagnose the adeno for sure(I know an MRI doesn't always show it)will an MRI pick up ovarian cancer if it's present? Sorry this has been so long, I'm just trying to get to the bottom of some of my pains and aches. Any advice or help would be truly appreciated!!

s to you all!!!!!!!

Questions about ovarian cancer...

((((((Julie))))))

Hi !
I just wanted to let you know I have the same symptoms as you and my biggest problem is adhesions. Since your biopsies came back normal, just a thought, but it could be adhesions causing your pain. Something to think about and research. Do a search and look for post with adhesions. I know I have seen alot of post with links that might be of some help to you. Hope you feel better soon hun! Good luck with your MRI tomorrow!

Questions about ovarian cancer...

Thanks, Renee! I thought my doctor had cleaned all those pesky adhesions up in October, but I suppose they may have come back or maybe there were some little buggers hiding somewhere.. I have had most of these problems for years, so I suppose(?) that if there was a serious problem it would have reared it's ugly head by now or I'd be deathly ill. I do hope the MRI will give me some definitive answers tomorrow.

S to you!

Questions about ovarian cancer...

Hi Julie,
First of all, I love your avatar. Its beautiful!
Now...it sounds to me as though these things you are experiencing could be caused by many things, but I realize its easy to let your mind wander and think the worst.

It sounds like you are being well looked after, and I am sure your doctor is trying to find the source of your pain one step at a time.

As for your question about the CA 125, from what I read here, that can be elevated for many reasons other than ovarian cancer, so that will not tell you 100% that it may be that.

Also regarding the MRI, I know that is a bit different than a CT scan, which is what I had, and because my cancer was a fairly large tumor, they were able to detect that on the scan, however that alone did not tell them that it was a malignant tumor. In my case it was a combination of that scan, an ultrasound and BETA and LDH bloods tests, which told them that there was a very strong possiblilty that this was malignant. At that point my gyn consulted with a gyn oncologist, and they both did my surgery.

I think probably one thing to ask your doctor if you are truly concerned about this would be whether they think it would be a good idea to be seen by an oncologist. But it sounds to me like they are doing the tests to rule out things one at a time, and see if this can be handled without the major surgery of a hyster.

Its your health and your body of course, so you can certainly discuss your concerns about ovarian cancer with the doctor and see what they think.

We also have an Options and Alternatives forum here as well Julie, and by reading and posting a question there you may come across others who have been through this, and see what they have decided to do. I wish you all the best with your MRI tomorrow and be sure to let us know how you do!!
All the best to you Julie,
Hugs

Maria.....

.... thank you so much for replying. Thanks about the avatar, I made it with a program on my computer. =o) Yes, the MRI is much different than the CTscan in that it is supposed to show a 2 or 3D type image of whatever it is they're looking at. My doctor wants to take a look at all the pelvic organs, but the uterus is his main concern right now. I think you're very right that my symptoms could be caused by a wide variety of things and I shouldn't worry so much, but being a natural born worrier(get it honestly..)that's kinda hard for me to do. I'll talk to my doctor, though about my concerns and hopefully we'll get to the bottom of things. He never mentioned anything that looked suspicious when he did my lap in October, but I wasn't sure just how much they can see while they're in there. I'll definitely let you know what the MRI shows. I read your story, btw, brought tears to my eyes! You are one brave lady! And a wonderful person to share your experiences!! God bless you! And, thanks so much, again!

Questions about ovarian cancer...

Awww Julie,
You are very kind. Thank you for reading my story. I am not really brave at all. I think its just a case where when faced with this terrible diagnosis, we find a fight within us that we never knew we had. I had and continue to have the most wonderful doctors and specialists working on my case, and with them, and lots of support from family and friends, and the prayers of many, I got through it!!

Again all the best with your test, and we will be waiting to hear how you do!!
Big hugs to ya!!

Hi Julie

Sounds like your dr. is keeping an eye on you. The tests that can help detect ovarian cancer are: transvaginal ultrasound (color & black & white), CA 125, Pelvic/Rectal exam, Cat Scan. So that being said, you could ask for these things if you wanted.

I had symptoms for a long time which were attributed to many other things. But - Once I got a dr. that said lets do a sonogram to rule out anything nasty stuff the diagnosis was very quick, within days I had all my lab works in and the diagnosis. So if your dr. did a lap, didn't you have to have bloodwork then? Maybe he has already run the CA and you didn't even realize. And he seems really on top of things.

Sometimes it is hard to deal with all the aches we have. I hope that yours are from adhesions or REALLY BETTER than that, something that can be easily fixed.

Questions about ovarian cancer...

Thank you, Robin. Before I had the lap done, I had a blood test for anemia(which came back positive)but I never did ask if the CA125 test was part of that. I guess I'm a little confused about the MRI, as you didn't mention it being a way to detect ovarian cancer. My understanding was that an MRI actually picked up more than a CAT scan. Is this incorrect? I suppose what I'm asking is, after they do the MRI tomorrow, if it comes back showing nothing in or around the ovaries(although it's being run for a diagnosis of adenomyosis)then is it safe for me to assume that I'm in the clear? Or, perhaps I should still ask to have other tests run, just in case? I'm due for my yearly pap smear this month, in fact, so when I go in for that maybe I'll ask him to run those other tests. I better get on making my appt. sheesh. I've seen him so much lately, that I forgot to make my appt. for my yearly... LOL Thanks much for replying!
