Does taking progesterone cancel out some of the effects of estrogen?

This may be a dumb question, but if you are taking ERT, then add progesterone, does this cancel out some of the effects of the estrogen? I have added progesterone recently and my hot flashes, headache and mood swings have returned.

Re: Does taking progesterone cancel out some of the effects of estrogen?

I don't know about cancel but I know changing the balance can give you symptoms and that's why they say get the estrogen dose optimized before you add progesterone. I wonder if you need progesterone at all, or maybe less? It seems to be easy to get too much. I wish hormones were easier to figure out. Good luck finding balance.

It did for me. My anxiety, insomnia, and crazy moods always returned after just a couple of days on it. I just have had no luck with using it.

Yes, it does. Progesterone is an anti-estrogen.

Re: Does taking progesterone cancel out some of the effects of estrogen?

That's kind of what I figured. I had finally hit on a dosage of estrogen that made me feel pretty good. My doc put me on progesterone because of suspected recurrent endo after my hyst. I was on 100mg prometrium. I only took it for a week and a half and I started getting all of those symptoms back. Now she has switched me to provera at the lowest dose and I am hesitant to take it.

Thanks for the responses!

Re: Does taking progesterone cancel out some of the effects of estrogen?

Personally I would NOT take the progestin. That is NOT bioidentical and there are lots of problems associated with it, especially if you're going to be using it daily. Maybe your dose of progesterone needs to be lowered some. Prometrium only comes in 100mg and 200mg so or options might be to take it every couple of days or to go the compounding route. The other option would be to take the Prometrium and to raise your estrogen dosage.

Why does this have to be so hard? It's like a Catch-22.

I am on premarin 1.25 it is to much but the next lower dose is not enough. I added OTC progesterone cream and I am feeling better than I have in years. I would recommend trying a cream. It is easier to adjust your dose.

The cream is a good idea. Thanks!

I did start the Provera 2.5, but have been cutting it in half. Still have headache and hot flashes.
