Hormone issues???

I had a tah/bso in Dec and was given a patch when I left the hospital by the onc/gyn. I continued to have some problems (insomnia, minor nightsweats, etc) and was swithced to Estratest HS about three weeks ago by my primary gyn.

At the same appointment I asked about progesterone and was told that it would be inappropriate for someone that had a tah/bso to be on progesterone. She gave me some explanation about not needing it and one more hormone causing more problems. I also asked about hormone level testing and she said she didn't really believe in it because she treats how a person feels and not what the tests show. I agree with that basic theory but how does she know what hormones are high or low without doing testing ?

I am still having symptoms on estratest hs but I am not sure if I have given it enough time to work (about 3 weeks). I seem to have massive headaches all of the time and still have extreme insomnia. I also still have no patience, etc but I am not sure if that is because I am tired or because my hormones are out of wack. I go back to the doctor tomorrow and wanted to know some things to ask about to try to pinpoint my hormone problems. Does anyone have any advice ?

Hormone issues???

Hi K ,

These comments were made by your Dr? Hormone testing IS imp. It does take a few weeks if not several for your body to settle down from surgery, but I'd say this ERT probably is NOT working for you, or at least the amount. Most people go on estratest to help with libido, I am surprised she had you try that one before Estrace or one of the many other ERT's which does not have testosterone in it and has fewer side effects. I would also say that you are probably not getting enough ERT if you are having hot flashes, although insomnia is common for awhile ( but should settle down after awhile if you're getting enough estrogen) I think if you tried the Vivelle Dot or Estrace you'd have a much better reaction.

Talk to your Dr. about trying one of the many other ERT's and later, if you're still having trouble you might want to stand firm on the Progesterone issue. It's true that for some the added hormone might be a hassle, and you don't need it because of the cancer issues involved with uterus' but on the other hand, it could work great for you. Many of the women here use the Progesterone and love it.
And if your Dr. won't work WITH you, I'd find another Dr.! We will hopefully all live long lives and need Dr.'s who will help guide us with their education and experience as well as listen to us. My dad is a Dr. and always tells me that if someone isn't listening then they are not a very good Dr. Besides, let's remember, they work FOR us, and should work WITH us!! There are many great Dr.'s out there

Good Luck, Krisy

Hormone issues???

Hi I am sorry your Dr is not willing to try other things like progesterone. It really helps with insomnia. Many of us have found it to be an important part to balancing our HRT. Go to www.hormonejungle.com and read the articles on the pull down menu. There are articles on HRT choices and the benefits of progesterone. Also go to the FYI, helpful hormone links at the top of this form to find out about compounding pharmacies. A compounding pharmacist can help you find a Dr. that is willing to work with you. Hope you find some relief soon.
