don't take ibuprofen before surgery!!!!!!!

Hey Nicole,
Oh Sweetie, I am so sorry that you have to wait longer for your surgery. Thank God though that he did put if off a little longer, let me tell you why. I take ibuprofen every day also, but I didn't know that you were not suppose to take it before surgery, so I didn't tell my Doctor that I was taking it until 4 days before surgery. He told me to stop taking it immediately. however he didn't postpone it, I don't know why. Anyways in surgery I lost so much more blood than normal, and they put another IV in me and were getting ready to do a blood transfusion, when thank God the blood loss started to slow down. So they didn't have to do the transfusion. I am thankful because I had just had a transfusion a year prior and didn't want another one. I didn't find this wonderful site until after surgery, if I had I would have known about the ibuprofen earlier and would not have had to go through that.
Well I know it will be tough to wait longer, but it will be here before you know it, and you will be much better off.

thank you

Tina H.,

Thanks for the note, you are right about its better to wait then to lose too much blood. I did just in case donate a unit of my own blood just in case I do lose alot. I'm doing much better today, not quite as stressed, I have lots at work to keep me busy, and its already flyin by.

I decided that there was a positive to being in the castle over Valentines Day, that my dh will pamper me even more, and get to spoil me while I'm in there. I will be a pampered Valentines Princess!!

Feelin the Love,

That is great that you were able to bank your own blood, just in case because you never know if you will need it or not. I wanted to do that, but I wasn't able to because I was too anemic to loose anymore blood, so my Doc wouldn't let me.
Wow a Valentines Day you are right that will be extra special pampering.
Here's hoping that the time will fly by for you.
Take Care

{{{Nicole}}} I read that on the internet prior to surgery. Since I was in therapy for my arm...and getting shots I asked my therapist about what I'd read. She called my gyn. and sure enough they told her stop all anti-inflammatory drugs 10 days prior to surgery. Good thing I saw that. Don't know why my gyn. didn't tell me

I am so glad that I read this post...I am scheduled for 2/19 and usually take IBU everyday from pain..And will take a vicodin or two at nite to help with the pain in my hip..Is that alright to take before surgery..i have a slipped disc in my lower back that is why I take the vicodin..Or I'd never get any sl eep Does vicodin have IBU in it does anyone know? Thanks a bunch..Will have to call my Dr I guess

Vicodin is acetaminophen and no this one doesn't have ibuprophen in should be ok, but you must tell the dr's at pre-admission that you are taking it, as it is a narctotic.

The pre-admin will tell you whether or not to continue taking it, and if you have further questions, you should also check with your surgeon if he/she didn't prescribe the Vicodin for you.

You did answer your own question, if you take ibuprophen and the Vicodin, that means the Vicodin doesn't have the ibuprophen in cannot take two different ibuprophen containing prodcuts together..that's why you can take the Vicodin to help with your pain.

I don't think that Vicodin has ibuprofen in it - but check with your local
pharmacy. They can tell you if it does or not. Better yet, check with your Dr and
see it it's okay to be taking it now. My Dr. gave me Ultram (another pain med) to
take instead of ibuprofen.

I had my pre-op appt on 02/04/02. I posted earlier in this thread, but just
happened to remember some other things that they asked me about.
They definitely don't want you taking some herbs - herbs such as
Echinacea (good for fending off colds) and St. John's Wort.

Hopes this helps all you LIW.
Take care,

Vitamins and drinks

Hi sisters - In my pre-op interview with the hospital I was told not to take Vitamin E and ALSO vitamin C! Any anti-inflamatory will thin your blood (so aspirin and ibuprofin are out, but Tylenol, which doesn't do much is in). Also, DON'T DRINK!! That's another blood thinner.

Nicole, I can sympathize because I had a surgery postponed a few years ago because I had a drink the night before the timed bleeding test. I was also a marathoner and took 3 ibuprofin before every run.

THIS time, I'm being really careful - I can't live through a postponement!

I am also scheduled for Valentine's Day, and boy am I glad I read this post. I've been taking ibuprofen every day for headaches caused by the iron they are giving me to build up my blood.

Good luck to everyone who goes in the next few days. I am busy cleaning, getting taxes done, everything else I can think of!
