Multiple Surgeries

I'm one week away from surgery, and reality is just starting to set in. I bought a new robe and slippers today so that I can look like a proper princess in the castle. I actually go for a final 2nd opinion tomorrow...this will be my 4th! I have had three positives so far, but this is the "big one", my colo-rectal surgeon who needs to be there for the surgery also because of all my past bowel surgeries. I have always been lucky, bouncing back after surgery fairly quickly, but this time I'm scared. I'll be 50 this year, and just don't have the energy I used to. Has anyone else had multiple surgeries prior to TAH? Would like to hear what recovery was like! Thanks for listening.

Multiple Surgeries

Hello, Butternut. This Thursday will be my 4th and hopefully final surgery. You will find a lot of women on this website who have had multiple surgeries. Often, the hysterectomy is the final outcome from several attempts to keep the reproductive organs in tack. Best of luck to you. I look forward to reading your responses.

Multiple Surgeries

Hi there...I agree...many many women here are veterans of multiple surgeries. I have had several D&Cs, three laps, hysteroscopies, laser myomectomy, uterine suspension and my hyster.

Honestly...this recovery was by far the best one. Perhaps because of this site. I was so well prepared and careful about my recovery, that it went very smoothly. Apart from that, it was just plain not as painful. And what pain there was, was very well managed, first at the hospital, and then at home.

I can't speak for anyone else, but if I had known how good I was going to feel, I would NOT have put it off for so long out of fear of the recovery. (which I did!!!)

Hope this helps.

Karen

Multiple Surgeries

I had a laparoscopic tubal, D&C, hysteroscopy, and partial myomectomy (all in one operation, not 4) 6 weeks before my hyst. It was supposed to have been an ablation, but Doc discovered fibroids, so couldn't do it. I asked to move right on to the hyst, since I already was not working, and wanted to get it all over with.

Between the two surgeries I recovered from the first, and did a lot of walking, a little working out, and ate well. I also wasn't bleeding so bad. So I was a lot healthier going into my hyst, and I think that's a big reason my recovery from that went so easily.

My only recommendation, regardless of previous surgeries, would be to start taking excellent care of yourself right now, Don't wait until your recovery to start getting enough rest, drinking lots of water, walking every day, etc. The better you can feel going in, the better you'll feel afterward, generally.

Multiple Surgeries

Hi:

I am the same age as you are 49 - turning 50 this year. I have had two ovarian cyst emergency operations 5 years ago and 22 years ago, tubal ligation - 27 years ago, tubal reconstruction 18 years ago bleeding ulcer (emergency operation) 11 years ago, and finally a TAH/BSO November of last year. Like you, I was concerned about the recovery time and to be totally honest the TAH took the longest to get over. I was off work for 8 weeks, did all the right things (drank water, walked, and generally took it easy). My strength did come back but it took much longer than the other procedures. So good luck and hope everything goes well!! Just an honest observation.
