Second Opinions?

Ok, so how do you go about getting that 2nd opinion? Are some Drs. insulted when you want another opinion? Does the 1st Dr. recommend the 2nd Dr.? Does the 1st Dr. send all his Xrays and reports to the 2nd Dr. or do you have to go through everything again? Just wondering. Thanks

2nd opinions

I would like to say, If a Dr gets offended by you wanting a second opinion, he/she is not very professional. Most Dr's understand wanting a second opinion when it comes to major surgery. If you had to go threw a gp to get to see a gyn then you may have to see your gp again for a second referral. Be sure your insurance also knows and will comply with this. You would also sign a concent form for the new Dr to get your med records from the other Dr. Also you can get them yourself and take them to the new Dr.

This is major surgery. it is not only physical but an emotional one as well. Be sure you have your options open to you and you are well informed. Spend some time here on the hystersisters website. Go to the top of the message boards page. You will see a row of small purple buttons. Go to the "search" and put in your key words on subjects you are interested in learning. Go to your Dr armed with knowledge and questions for him/her to answer.

You can also come to the HS chatroom. It is a great line of support and can be lots of fun to. A way to put your mind at ease knowing your not alone

Always take care and be well

Second Opinions?

Hi, Cindy,

I agree with Shell66. If your doctor were insulted by your choice to seek a second opinion, I believe I'd seek two ADDITONAL opinions. Most doctors will assume that you'd prefer to have at least two opinions, simply because a hysterectomy is major surgery.

Depending on your insurance, you may need to get their approval before seeking a second opinion.

My insurance REQUIRED me to get at least two opinions, before they'd approve my surgery. I ended up getting three opinions. My medical records and test results were sent to each doctor, after I consented, so I didn't need to have tests re-done. Each doctor did examine me, of course. I chose the doctors for my second and third opinions, myself, according to the recommendations of friends I trust.

Please feel free to ask questions anytime, and good luck with your decision.

Best wishes,

Second Opinions?

I agree with the other responders, but want to add a comment or two. Better to go through the GP for the referral for an additional reason: the gyn would probably refer you to someone he/she knows well and who thinks the same way. A doctor out of that loop might have a fresh perspective and possibly some different treatment options(although most times the second opinion is the same). If you are free to choose your own doctor, try calling a medical school in your state for some suggestions.

A good doctor is not threatened by your going for a second opinion. But you don't have to tell him/her. Just say you need time to think about your surgery since it's a big decision, and then go for that appointment. I actually got 3 opinions and told none of the doctors. (all opinions were same).
