PCA Pump & Allergy To Morphine

I am allergic to Morphine (docs know this, and it is charted in my medical records). I am sure they can use something else in the pump (if the pump is available for my use). I was thinking Demerol. Anyone have the same similiar problem with Morphine and use of the pump?

PCA Pump & Allergy To Morphine

I'm have a reaction to morphine too..as well as other pain medications and they always give me benedryl to control the itching. However, there's other medications they can use in the pump. Have you had pre-op appt yet? Maybe you can schedule some time to talk with anest. as well as your dr. to find pain medication that will work best for you.

PCA Pump & Allergy To Morphine

I too am not able to take morphine. Not because of an allergy but it gives me horrible hallucinations and nightmares. Anyway, I have my TVH on 9 Feb and they had no problems with using Demerol in the PCA pump. It worked great and I did not have the nightmares or anything. After they removed the pump (next day) I had a few shots of demerol which did the trick. The nurse actually put a band on me before surgery that said "no morphine".
Good luck.

PCA Pump & Allergy To Morphine

I too am HIGHLY allergic to morphine. When I had my myomectomy 3 years ago I was given a diludid pump. I am scheduled for a hysterectomy next month, and I am sure I will be given the same thing again. I just let everyone I talk to know I am allergic to morphine, and I made sure it was all over my chart. Good luck.....
