Almost 2 weeks post op and still have Gas pains?

Hi All:

I am about 2 wks post op from my surgery and I had the normal gas pains after the surgery lasted maybe 3 days..I had surgery on Wednesday, by Sat afternoon gas pains seemed to be gone..but since then I am still getting them off and on and they HURT!!

Is this normal, I notice them for a few hours after I eat something, I am trying to make sure I drink lots of water, and trying to make sure I don't eat anything that would normally be a problem to digest.

Any suggestions?

I am walking around alot, but today when I went to pick up kids from school, I nearly fell over with the pain..once I pass it I am fine..what gives?

Thanks for any help in the matter (wish it was something else alittle less embarrassing!!)

Almost 2 weeks post op and still have Gas pains?

Hi! I'm 2 wks post op too and I still have gas (?) pains too. I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one too! Mine come on suddenly just before a BM and then I'm fine again till next day. I'm not sure if it's gas or tenderness from handling during surgery. My insides sometimes seem to be jarring around when I walk, not pain, just tenderness. Could this tenderness be what you are feeling too?Are you eating foods that may cause gas? I've noticed that I cannot tolerate (yet) some foods that I have always enjoyed. I hope this is not permanent. As for picking up your family, are you supposed to be driving? My dr said no to driving for 2 1/2 wks. I do seem to feel better each day although it seems as though time is going by soooo slowly. Take care.

Almost 2 weeks post op and still have Gas pains?

You ladies are not the only ones who have gas problems at two weeks, believe me. My system wasn't working anywhere close to normal until 4 weeks post-op.

Remember that when you're under anesthesia, you're system shuts down entirely. Also, your intestines may be still trying to settle into a new position inside you. All this adds up to a sluggish system, which will usually result in gas

Are you on stool softeners? Those helped me a lot. You might want to call your Dr. and see what he says about it. The early recovery is 6-8 weeks long, and this is one of the reasons why. Yes, it seems to take forever! Hang in there...it DOES get better!

By the way, my abdominal tenderness remained for many months, slowly tapering off. It takes from 6 months to a year to totally heal inside, according to a Dr. I'll bet you'll be feeling much better in just a couple of more weeks!

My very best to you...

Almost 2 weeks post op and still have Gas pains?

I am four months post-op and am still experiencing occasional gas pains, and let me tell you, they HURT!! The gas seems to "trap" in my lower left side, exactly where an ovary use to live.
I do take a stool softener every other evening to help move things along, as I've always been prone to constipation. They really help.

Thanks ladies!

I just assumed once the gas from the surgery was gone, that would be it..

I had stopped my stool softener as I have only been taking pain med's when needed, which hasn't been every day.

I haven't been constipated nor did I have problems with that prior to surgery.

I quess I should stay on the Gasx awhile longer (but doesn't seem to be helping all that much) and maybe keep up with my stool softener..

Gas X really works for me

I have had IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) for years. Believe me, without Gas X, I don't know what I'd have done.

Had my hyst on 2-20, been taking Gas X and it's working great! And don't get a generic brand!!!

Another good idea is to keep a diary on what foods cause the gas - it's different for everyone. For years, I have not been able to eat beef, onions, apples & bananas. Took 3 months of diary-keeping to discover this.

Good luck!

Almost 2 weeks post op and still have Gas pains?

Hey Debra:

I didn't have problems prior to surgery, so don't know what's making me have more gas pains..I just thought it would be over within 3 or 4 days of my surgery..I have had laproscopic surgery before and don't remember having this much pain this far out..

So far, there are only a couple things I know I can't eat, and I don't for that reason..but geez..I thought this would be getting better, not worse..today they are much worse pain wise than even right after my surgery.

Oh, well, I will hang in there..

Thanks for the info!!

Almost 2 weeks post op and still have Gas pains?

at 3 weeks postop I made the mistake of drinking a beer and eating french onion soup. It was the worst mistake I made recuperating from this thing.

My advice "Don't eat gassy food."

Anna,

Just a thought. You might have had lap surgery before, but was a major organ removed at that time? Keep in mind that you have countless stitches inside that you can't see. Those healing tissues can get inflamed and cause a lot of discomfort in general. Believe me, I had no idea just how much was involved in hyst surgery until I found this site at 3 weeks post-op. Even a lap-assisted surgery is quite a "big deal".

My very best to you...
