Share surgery on Facebook or not?

So I have FB friends from Great Britain and all over the USA, with whom I am not close enough to send an email. I was wondering is it too tacky to post that I'll be off recuperating a bit and why, or should this just be news for close family and friends?

Re: Share surgery on Facebook or not?

I kept mine private..

The important people in my life knew and that was good for me. I don't believe in putting it all out there on FB...but that's me

Re: Share surgery on Facebook or not?

Most of the people I have on my FB knew what was going on. I didn't make a big announcement about it but I did make a post the day of surgery and while in recovery. In fact I made one today referencing how much better I feel already compared to this time last year.

Re: Share surgery on Facebook or not?

I plan on putting a prayer request for my surgery on the morning of my surgery on my fb wall, but won't actually say what it's for. Anybody close to me already knows the deets.

Re: Share surgery on Facebook or not?

I mulled the same question over before my surgery! I chose to not post about my surgery. I am a open person maybe to much so, but for me, in the end I felt the people who needed to know already knew. I am not a big fb poster to start off with either so it would prob have looked like I was looking for sympathy or something.
I think it is totally your choice with what u feel Comfy with. Good luck

Re: Share surgery on Facebook or not?

Are you ready for the world to know about your surgery? Are you ready for the comments that could be made regarding it?

Posting on Facebook opens your surgery up to public discussion. In the past, women have found that just within their own circle of family and friends the topic of a hysterectomy can become hot. If you share on a site such as Facebook, you don't limit the discussion and comments to those who love you most dearly. You could inadvertently find that some have some very strong opinions about this type of surgery which could lead to some very hot discussion toward you, about you, and amongst each other.

My personal opinion is that if you would not post it on the front page of the paper where everyone in your town could read and comment on it, don't post it on Facebook.

My !

Re: Share surgery on Facebook or not?

I am to trying to decide whether I would post something or not.

I know there is a way on FB to keep it from posting to everyone by using groups so I may just post the day of and make it private to just those close personal friends and my family that actually know what is going on.

I am still unsure if I am even going to do that but it is an option. I dont want everyone I went to high school with to know what is going on so I will definitly leave them out of the loop!

Still deciding but yeah I have thought about this too!

Re: Share surgery on Facebook or not?

I posted that I'm having surgery but not necessarily what type of surgery I'm having. Those that are very close to me know and a few that didn't know have inboxed me. I also share posts from the Hystersisters fb page on my page because I have friends who are looking for info. This is a conversation that has been had with those that are very close to me before I made the decision to have a full hysterectomy and they know it's a quality of life issue. It's not like that's the only thing I post about, so there's other things for them to have debates about me and my family. All in all it's a personal choice.

Re: Share surgery on Facebook or not?

I did post what was going on with me and I asked for prayers. I don't have a ton of FB friends, just some friends and family. My account if also private for my FB "friends" only.

Re: Share surgery on Facebook or not?

Not only did I post it on facebook but I also posted a blog and have been sharing it like crazy and I work for a radio station and with my surgery on Monday I also spoke about it on air today.

Why? Because I wanted to bring awareness to the women out there that no one is invincible and this can happen to anyone (I was diagnosed with cervical cancer stage 1b1). I have a powerful tool available to me to reach thousands of women and stress the importance of our yearly exams.

After going "public" with it immediately I knew it was the right decision as my inbox was flooded with women telling me they hadn't had exams in 6mos, 9mos, one even had gone 3 years since her last exam but after reading my story they had appointments and went.

Best wishes in your decision and whatever you decided it will be the one for you. Prayers on your surgery and recover as well.
