Keep one ovary or not ???

Hello Ladies,

I am so glad to have found this site, it is a real godsend. I was diagnosed with a fibroid about 5 years ago and have recently learned that it has now grown to the size of a large grapefruit (I am still not sure why they measure those things in fruit equivalents). Well, in addition I also have a condition called Complex Hyperplasia without Atypia and also a cyst on my right ovary and a polup on my uterus. With these 4 strikes against me, my doctor has recommended a total hyster. He has said that he will remove as much of the cyst as he can but isn't certain that he can save the right ovary.

My question is this: With the Complex Hyperplasia, do I have him take both ovaries so as to rule out any cancer or do I take my chances for a few more years? Just in case you don't know: Hyperplasia (as I am told) is a pre-cancerous condition.

My surgery is scheduled for March 12th and I am beginning to get a little nervous. I am 39 years old and would rather not go on HRT at my age but also would rather not go through any additional surgery later.

Any advice or support a sister can give me would be much appreciated.

Keep one ovary or not ???

Mary. That's always a hard decision and something that is very individual. I had family history of cancer and since I had cysts on both ovaries, fibroid on uterus and problems with cervix...I discussed pros and cons with my dr...and decided to have tah/bso.

The ovary question has been discussed a lot here...use search engine at the top and search by keyword "ovary" in the pre-op section of the pull down. That will give you lots to read.
