Help me, ladies -- what is a swelly belly and can TVH ladies get it, too?

Let me know what you know --
What is a swelly belly and can TVH ladies get it, too? I had a TVH/BSO/Bladder repair in October and my belly is swollen and it is hard to maintain a good weight. I feel lumpy and bloated. I posted some of this on the hormone jungle site but wanted to know what you all thought about the swelly belly subject -- who has it, who can get it, and why??
Blessings to all,
Margie

Margie, the "swelly belly" is a term we coined to describe the way our healing tummy tends to "swell" after surgery. The swelling is NOT fat, it is actually caused by the healing tissues swelling, much the same way as an healing knee will swell up. It might add to your weight, since it can also involve some water build up. It is your body's mechanism to protect the recovering and very fragile tissues. It is also a sign that you are doing too much, too soon and need to pamper the for a little longer.

I had a TVH and I had the swelly belly. I would notice it even after 7 or 8 months, on those days that I did too much.

Thanks for that. Is there anything one can do about this swelly belly? And will it go away?

Margie, the best thing you can do for the swelly belly is Exercising will not help it, since it will strain the healing tissues even more, resulting in increased swelling.

Rest, with your feet up, and you will see an improvement. I would notice that it would go down in the morning and creep back up during the day, reaching it's peak around the time I came home from work. Depending on whether or not I rested once I got home, it might go down in the evening, or only wait until the morning to go down.

And yes, it is very likely that it will go away. I noticed that mine went away in September 2001. By that time, I was almost 8 months post-op.

Thanks, I am 4 months post op and forget to rest of late, as I am feeling better. I had complications and didn't feel good until February, so I am glad to know that this may go away and that my body is still telling me to take it easy at times.

Bless you,
Margie
