Six weeks recovery? Honestly???

I'm scheduling a partial hysterectomy with an anterior repair, posterior repair, and vaginal vault suspension. I've read the recovery period is between four and six weeks. A friend of mine had this done in Oct. 2001 and needed ten weeks to recover from a 'normal' surgery.

What is the HONEST to goodness truth about recovery timeframes...

and what will employers and insurance companies accept as reasonable?

I'm trying to prepare my employers for best and worst case scenario...

but its difficult when the time frame is a month vs. two and a half.

Six weeks recovery? Honestly???

Hi, Denise,

The honest to goodness answer is that we are all different. We come in all shapes and sizes and colors; we range from extremely fit to couch potato; we are young or old; our medical conditions differ; the types of surgery we require differs; and each doctor's technique differs slightly. That's an honest answer.

Typically, it seems to take about six to eight weeks for a women to feel ready to resume normal activities after a hysterectomy. Some women may recover more quickly. Some women may need longer to recover. Many women have posted on Hystersisters that they're returning to work after six to eight weeks. (In the long run, it takes six months to a year to completely recover from a hysterectomy.)

Your doctor is usually the person who decides when you're ready to go back to work. I think it would be important to discuss this question with your doctor, also.

For me, it took six weeks. But your experience may very well be different from mine.

Sending healing hugs,

Six weeks recovery? Honestly???

I would agree that 6-8 weeks is "about average," but how many people are actually average? I had a TAH with work done on my colon, bowel and intestines due to adenomyosis. It took about eight weeks before I could really lift/drive/exercise, however, my vaginal cuff did not heal quick enough and I started bleeding when I would do these things. My doctor put me back on bed rest until 11 weeks. At that point I was able to resume "all normal activity."

I would say that I felt well enough to lead a normal life at 11-12 weeks with only occassional pain and fatigue. If you must give your boss a number, I would say "probably eight weeks."

Good luck,
