cough

Hi all! I am scheduled for surgery on Friday. Was wondering if any of you post-op girls went into surgery with a cough? And if so how bad is it afterwards when you cough? I came down with a cold/bronchitus 2 1/2 weeks ago and have not been able to shake the cough. The Doctor knows and I was on Zythromax too but the cough just won't leave. Let me know, please?

Be sure to tell every one who talks to you especially your anisyoligist. Have a pillow with you at all times, I especially used mine for the car ride home.
Good luck!

I agree with Pam about the pillow -- it was a God send when I first had surgery and even a couple weeks post surgical, I do reach for it when I have had my coughing fits. Thanks to whom ever it was that gave the idea to have a small pillow with you through out the recovery period! Hope all goes well for you and God bless.

cough

Hi,

Well, I ended up getting a cough after my surgery and it did cause me some problems post op. I coughed for a couple of weeks after my surgery and even with good cough syrup it was very painful. I held pillows against my incision, etc, etc but it hurt me deep inside. I ended up with redness and swelling in the area under my bikini cut incision. The doc has had me on two rounds of antibiotics. I am now at six weeks post op, feeling okay but I went for my check up today and I am not yet completely healed. I don't feel completely healed so I wasn't surprised. The doc gave me another two weeks off work and I have to put estrogen cream inside me for two weeks. So anyway, a cough can cause problems!!

Thanks for the info even tho it doesn't make me feel much better about all of this. I go in tomorrow at 3:30 to see if he will let me go ahead with the surgery or not. I wish I could go in earlier due to the fact that I can't eat all day. Light breakfast and then nothing but clear liquids. At least it is before I have to take the stuff to flush out my system!
I am trying to think positive about this but am finding it difficult to do. I do however feel a calmness that has eluded me all week. Tomorrow I find out one way or another and I will have to live with it. I just pray that it is a go because I have this scheduled around our spring break so I won't have to miss as much work which is important because I may be out of a job come June.
I guess it is up to God now. Wish me luck!

bluejean,
I know how you feel however, the Dr's know best when it comes to your lungs. We wait and are filled with questions and the the fear of what is to come.
Keep praying and know that you have "sisters" here for you!

I hope I didn't discourage you! I'm sure if the doc says its okay to do the surgery it will go just fine. Your cough will probably be fine by then since you have had it for awhile. Be positive and get if over with if you can. Although my healing has taken a bit longer it has not been bad at all!!

Good luck,
Sheila

She817-

No, you didn't discourage me. At least I'm not anymore discouraged than I have been for the last few days; praying day and night for the cough to go away and then start hacking all over again. I guess what happens happens. I think all will be well. Thanks for your words of encouragement and hope you feel 100% ASAP!

Cough

Hi Sweetee,
This was one of my main concerns since I am a smoker. The FEAR of coughing for me was much more than the actual discomfort from coughing. I felt so vulnerable and broken after surgery because I knew about the staples and all. The hospital has very very good cough medicine and when you feel the urge to cough, grab a pillow, press it firmly against your lower abdomen, bend forward slightly and cough. I also drank fifteen of those hospital water pitchers which dilutes the flem and makes it easier to cough up. Don't worry, you won't break. I would definitely try to see if I could get it scheduled early in the morning if you can. Drink lots of water, this helped me to have an easy urine, gas and first BM too! Good luck! Huggs.

cough

My original hyst date was for 1/31/02, but just about a week before my surgery I came down with a cold/flu. I also had a dry, hacking, cough that I couldn't seem to shake! Well, I went to see my regular Dr. for the cough and it turned out I had post-viral bronchitis! So, when I went in for my pre-op appt. and gave my Dr. the list of meds I was taking he opted to re-schedule the surgery. He told me I looked and sounded sick. He wanted me in my best health for the surgery. At first I was really bummed because I couldn't stand the waiting. But, a week and a half later the cold/flu had gone away and so did the cough! Then I was glad that my Dr. had preferred to wait. But, your Dr. will know what is best for you. All the best to you at the castle!
