2 Weeks Post Op Laparoscopic Hysterectomy: My Story

Hopefully this is in the right place!

I wanted to do a post op update for those who are preparing to have a LAVH. I know how scared I was pre op and I combed through the post op section reading update after update!

I'll be as specific as I can.

I had my LAVH two weeks ago tomorrow. I didn't have to do a bowel prep kit or anything unpleasant, just no eating or drinking after midnight prior to surgery.

My surgery took somewhere between 60-90 minutes. They took everything: uterus, cervix, tubes and ovaries.

I have a history of aspiration when removing the breathing tube so I told my anesthesiologist and they took extra precautions to make sure that didn't happen this time (it didn't).

I also have a history of really low BP after surgery. That did happen. Because my BP was SO low, they could not give me pain meds when I woke up. In fact, it took 6 hours before I got stable enough to be given anything. That sounds pretty awful but my pain really only got to a 6/7 so it was tolerable.

The worst thing was they inserted my catheter wrong, I kept telling them I needed to go and they kept saying you have a catheter! I've had them before and so I knew it was in wrong but no one listened to me. Finally, my new nurse jiggled the line, it came loose and I FLOODED the cath bag. Told them so! Unfortunately, I did get a UTI because of it. WHICH SUCKS.

Anyway, I was released the next day. I don't remember much but I do want to give you a word of caution. If at all possible, avoid your pain pills. If motrin can control your pain, stick with that! Why? The constipation is awful. I ended up (TMI warning) having to have my husband give me a suppository followed by TWO enemas. It was horrific. That pain was worse than the hysterectomy pain! Stay on top of your walking and water consumption and avoid pain pills if at all possible.

At 1 week post op, I was back at soccer practice with my husband and kids. I was able to go out to eat. I could walk totally fine and had almost no pain. The gas pains were far worse than anything surgery related. I was back down to my pre op weight and size within a week.

Now I'm almost 2 weeks post op. I feel physically fine but very tired. I'm not up to my normal activity level but I go out with my family, shop, attend my kids sports stuff etc. I'm cooking dinner and doing laundry today.

My husband is very protective and supportive and he does all the lifting and vacuuming. He actually read the mister sister page and follows all the rules. ;-)

I do still need help with my kids because they are little. My parents and husband have taken great care of me. I've been able to rest and relax and only do the things I feel like doing.
