HRT after Hyst

Hi Halogirl,

I have the same questions and can find no answers so we need some help from other sisters. You have gone thru a lot at a very young age. My oncologist has told me that the type of cancer I had was ER receptor positive, so HRT would be unsuitable, I was fortunate that the cancer didn't spread to the lymph nodes.
I hope everything goes well at your pre-op appt. My Gyn said that it's hard to indicate how anyone will react after this surgery.
Some people have menopausal symptoms and others have none at all or very mildly.
I'm very concerned about not being able to use HRT as much as you are. Forgive this rambling on!
I'm real clear on the surgery and how it's performed and the anesthesia I'll receive and how long recovery time lasts, but I'm very scared about this issue. It's like what kind of person will I be after I have this surgery.
We'll hang in there and together will find help from our "sisters."

HRT after breast cancer

I was just reading about the current thinking about using HRT after breast cancer at

the Doctor's Guide

Here's what they decided.

"No ideal studies have been published." But there are five small studies. So there's a clue, but not really a definitive answer. In one of the small studies the control group not taking HRT actually had more recurrences.

Here's the conclusion of their look at all the studies:
"In the studies identified in this search, there was little evidence of increased recurrence of breast cancer with the use of HRT in patients previously diagnosed with breast cancer. However, these studies involved small numbers of patients, the duration of follow-up was not long, and there was potential for bias. Caution should prevail until appropriate clinical trials are conducted. After weighing up the evidence against the benefits of menopause symptom control, the general practitioner continued to prescribe HRT for this patient."

hrt after breast cancer

Thanks Trish for your help and support. I went to the site and copied the report and going to take it with me to my pre-op appt. I am so afraid of the surgical menopause symptoms...and it seems that if I could have low low dose hrt to help with symptoms for a awhile I could get used to menopause but at the same time I am afraid of the cancer word again. I'll be honest, I am really preoccupied with losing my "libido". It seems at 38 DH and I are finally maturing into a great intimate life (no more infertility problems, hopefully less pain from endo after tahbso) and I hate to give it up. Maybe I am worrying for nothing...but I know hormones really effect me. I am also preoccupied with scary thoughts of waking up after surgery or when path report comes back that oh, you have ovarian ca. So I guess its true this waiting is the hardest part....can't wait to put it all behind me but afraid of what the future could bring. I am posting the hrt question on a breast ca site. I will let you sisters know what I find out!
