Started period again 2 weeks after first one

I am 52. Very stressful holiday season. Periods prior to this (for years) have been 26-29 days apart, always, usually preceded by 4 or five days of light spotting. Ultrasounds done during this time showed no abnormalities. Had one a couple years ago right after my period ended that showed very slim, uniform endometrial lining so no endometrial biopsy was needed at the time.

The past few months I had no PMS symptoms at all - no breast soreness. Nov. period came on time; December period a couple days late, but was preceded a week prior with a couple spots of blood on day 25. December period was lighter than normal (usually I get two heavy days but no real clotting). Imagine my surprise when exactly 14 days after the start of this period I started another light one. Today is the fifth day and it's stopping on its own - very light this evening.

I am wondering if I did not ovulate in Dec, given I had none of the normal signs of my period - I thought I was going to skip after getting that one little bout of spotting, then nothing for the next 10 days.

My game plan is to see what happens at the end of the month - will I get another period in two weeks or will I wait another 28 days? Which period was the real one

Of course if this continues into next month, I will schedule another ultrasound and probably an endometrial biopsy just to be sure. They had brought up the idea of a polyp due to the spotting, but after the ultrasound I had, my doc said that my lining was so thin and so uniform, nothing could hide there so it was probably hormonal in nature or a result of my tubal ligation. Makes sense since I've had mild PCOS all my life, but weirdly, after my third child and my tubal, I have had monthly cycles and never skipped.

Anyone else get periods closer together like this as they approach menopause? I can't believe the timing - EXACTLY 14 days, is coincidental?!
