Post op pain option

One tip I would like to pass on about options for post op pain relief. I am the biggest wimp imaginable and one of my greatest fears was waking up from anesthesia in agony!! For various reasons I could not have an epidural or spinal with morphine.

Pre op I asked my surgeon if she would put a lot of local anesthetic (marcaine aka bupivacaine) in the incision when she closed me up and also asked the anesthesiologist if he could give me some toradol (keterolac) iv - it's an injectable form of a drug that acts like advil. I woke up relatively comfortably with this combo and was able to transfer myself unaided from the stretcher into my bed post op.

For all you LIW - I can't emphasise how the wait is the worst part, I'm less than a week out and feeling great as long as I follow the rules, rest, drink, walk, drink, rest.... My water bottle and pillow stay with me the whole time.

Best wishes,

8 days post op

You are so right. I did better with my pain meds when I had them take me off that morphine pump about an hour after surgery. I hated it. I ended up taking pills and done much better. No grogginess and less pain. 's Mikki Jo
