Packing & vaginal cuffs

I think all I'm doing is reading & developing more questions & needing more support, & posting more posts.

Now I just got done reading about packing? What exactly is this? Will it be packing inside of me?

And what is a vaginal cuff? I had seen this mentioned earlier & asked the nurse at my pre-op & she had never heard of it (the surgical nurse was in surgery that day).

So, I'll just be bold & ask here that other question the nurse couldn't answer. Prior to a hysterectomy the semen pools at the base of the cervix & sperm travels up to the fallopian tubes. When all that is gone, where does the semen & the sperm end up at?

I asked my doctor earlier about sex after a hysterectomy & he said many men & women enjoy it more, as there is nothing blocking. So with this vaginal cuff thing, I'm really confused, & has anyone any thoughts on this "non-blocking" thing?

I thought it would just ( make everything all better ) but it sounds like there is an awfull lot of risks envolved. Well you were my first reply so we'll see how this goes. Hope everything goes Perfect for you, julie

Think of the vagina as the cardboard tube that is left on an empty roll of toilet paper. Now think of the uterus as a balloon attached to one end. That balloon (uterus) would catch the semen that came in through the tube (vagina). When the uterus is removed the vagina is sewn shut across the top end. Think of that cardboard tube being crimped shut and sewn closed. Now when semen, water, douche etc., goes in, it will come back out again.
The vagina is sewn down externally using your own ligaments so it will remain in place during intercourse. External to the vagina but internal to the body, natch.
The length of the vagina will remain the same. For some couples there is more pleasure and less pain as the penis is no longer hitting the cervix. For some couples there is no notable difference at all.
I hope this is helpful.

Thank you so much Shelly! You have told me what I wanted to know and was searching for. I thought that the vagina was to be sewn up, but I didn't know for certain.

I'll be having a total (everything removed) hysterectomy on Friday the 24th of May. The reason why I'm getting a complete hysterectomy? I've always had yearly bleedings...meaning, I would bleed (and lose blood clots) for weeks and months without stopping (for the last 10 years this would happen once a year!). Then I got a gyn who put me on a drug called, "Synthroid" to regulate this problem. And that worked for almost 3 years! But then I wouldn't stop bleeding and clotting again last month, but it was different this time. The difference was that I got anemic and was losing iron in my blood so fast that it made me pass out and get so weak that I had to go to the ER! I thought I was going to die for sure! My doctor regulated my iron by first giving me a blood transfusion (2 pints were put in my veins!) and then starting me on birth control pills 4 times a day! He also put me on iron suppliments 2 times a day and I feel pretty good and am not bleeding so badly now. I'm scared to death to have this surgery, but after all of the good things that I've heard about how life can be afterward, well, it's a little comforting. I'm still scared though. I've always had doctors tell me, surprisingly too, that my cervix is so's like right at the door of my vagina! I was wondering if this would be a problem for me in the "sex dept?" If anyone knows anything?
