Pre-Op Prep Includes Money Worries - Tips from a Post Op Princess

In the US, even with insurance, we have to deal with deductibles and out of pocket yearly maximums. Mine was $5,800. I know there are higher out there.
At a time when you should be thinking only of getting better, the hospital calls looking for a payment, usually a large one. They are very organized and can be aggressive. They don't want to wait until the bills go through the insurance. Here are my tips for dealing with the financial side.
I'm not a tax professional, just a consumer who's been there. (This repeats some of the things I said in response to two posters.)
1 - Breathe. Don't panic.
2 - Check with your insurance company to see exactly what your out of pocket liability is. My insurance rep told me not to make a pre-payment to the hospital at all.
3 - Be nice to the hospital rep when they call. They only want to tell their boss that they got a payment out of you. If you're too upset to be nice, get someone on the phone who can: husband, mother, sister, friend
4 - Negotiate. Your insurance company pays a contracted rate. The hospital discounted for them, they will most likely discount for you. If not, you don't lose by trying
5 - Don't volunteer what you can pay, even if you have the money. Make them come up with a figure, then tell them it's too high - whatever it is.
6 - Make a small good faith payment. That will get them off your back until you can recover and the insurance company pays what they owe
7 - Make a payment plan you can live with. They want to deal with you. It costs them money to hire a collection agency
8 - You can take money out of a 401K and put it in an HSA with no tax consequences. It's one of the few things you can do with 401K money like that
9 - Keep good records of what you spend. In a year where you spend a lot on health care, a portion of it may be tax deductible
10 - This is your rainy day. Life is expensive, but your health is priceless
11. Rest, heal, be nice to yourself
All my best wishes, princesses. It gets better, I promise
