Waiting and Waiting. . . How long until the magnesium citrate kicks in???

Tomorrow's the big day! Yikes!!!
I took my magnesium citrate and banned everyone from the bathroom. That was at 4:00 and now it is 8:40 and still nothing. . . nothing at all.

Please help!!! Quick - I don't want my surgery rescheduled because of this. How long does it take until this stuff kicks in??? What happens if it doesn't? What will I do then???

Thanks, Kathy

Waiting and Waiting. . . How long until the magnesium citrate kicks in???

Hi Kathy,

Some people it takes longer. Average is three to four hours. My guess is that you won't get much sleep tonight! I have heard of very few people that Mag Citrate didn't work on, and they were severely constipated. If it doesn't work, my guess would be that they would just do an enema. I wouldn't think they would cancel anything for that reason. Many Dr. do not even have their patients do a bowel prep.

Drink lots of fluids. That helps to flush everything out and hopefully will help to keep you hydrated.

Good luck tonight and tomorrow! Let us know how your castle visit goes.

Hi Kathy. Don't panic, I'll bet you will be fine. In my case I had to do an enema, but my nerves had already done the job for me so when I did it I got almost nothing! You might be in the same situation, or it just might take a little longer to work. Good luck tomorrow!

waiting on mag Citrate

Oh so *that's* what it is. My ob/gyn asked if i wanted an enema or the drinkable laxative, and considering that particular back orifice an exit not an entrance, I opted for the drink. She said 'you sure about that?', and I said yeah why? She said they'd tell me at the hospital pre-op . . . and I was getting a bit curious.

If it means sitting on the loo half the night, I'm not too worried. I'll be up every 2 hours changing pads and tampons, anyway, not regretting that that will be my last period.

Thanks for the info - have a good night
