I want a puppy...

Just wondering if anyone out there had to take care of a puppy right after surgery?

I just bought my first home, where I could finally have a puppy and my sister was breeding her Choclate Lab for 2nd time before she gets fixed, and I was gonna get one.

It so happened that her dog was bred the last week of Feb and I found out I had to have surgery on 3/14/02. My surgery was 4/3 and the puppies were due between 4/8 and 4/15. No puppies yet and maybe a false labor (her dog did this last year).

Now, I started looking for resue pups and I'm sorta wondering if I should hold off for a couple weeks? I'm feeling pretty good, and I have 3 teens waiting to help.

Any similiar situations out there? Any advice?

Go for it! You say you're feeling pretty good and have kids to help. The puppy would be a nice addition.

I got two cats shortly before my surgery. They were not kittens, and cats are pretty independent. But they have been such a comfort to me!

Just watch out for their loving ways of jumping on your -- belly -- NOT comfortable.

I want a puppy...

If you feel up to it go for it. My DH brought home two puppies (rescued) a week before my surgery. THey were 10 weeks old. I am now three weeks post -op and doing fine. I am taking care of them. However, they do stay outside most of the time. Just remember you should not pick anything heavier than your purse up. That is if it is not like mine with everything but the kitchen sink in it. LOL

Good Luck

Sure, puppies have to be 8 weeks old before they can leave their mothers, that's plenty of time to recover and be able to take care of a puppy.

I want a puppy...

Hi all,

Just wanted to say thanks for your replies...I GOT MY PUPPY!!!!

Got him last Sunday 4/21/02 at 8 weeks old. He is now 9 weeks, 18lbs, 1/2 black lab and 1/2 golden retriever (but he looks like a neufinland puppy!) REAL CUTE!!!!!

He's sleeps thru the night after the 3rd night, and is learning to be housebroken has now learned to climb up and downs stair (I can't lift him so this was a necessity while the kids were in school...and he's now crate trained (I found out dogs think of crates like their den) and he's sooo sweet.

Thanks for all your advice!!!

I'm glad to hear that you got your puppy. Take care, enjoy him, but be careful with him until you are released by the doctor. Don't bend too much or try to lift him if he's too heavy. Give him a kiss for me though. (I love the smell of a puppy, nothing like it in the world).
