Pap smears still needed after total hyst. Death hit close to home :(.

I just recieved the news of a woman's death due to vaginal cancer. She worked for us and it just opened my eyes that it is so important to keep getting pap smears even after a total (uterus and cervix) hysterectomy. I'm in shock over her loss as we were trying to contact her again for some more work. My dr. told me that some women can have them done once a year, once every three years, or can just forget about them all together. I asked what he recommended and he said he still recommends them every year. Even though there is less of a worry about cancer, recieving this news hit close to home and made me aware that it is still important to keep getting checked for vaginal cancer. It's not a bad idea anyway as the dr. looks for other things to. I wanted to add that this was metastatic vaginal cancer which spread.

Thanks for the info. Vaginal cancer is rare, but my doctor did recommend having the PAP every year anyway, which I've done, since like you I go every year to check for other things.

CM3, thanks for ing this back to the top. It's so unfortunate that you had to learn the hard way, by loosing someone close, as to why it's important to still get PAP smears
