Pap smears still needed after total hyst. Death hit close to home :(.

As a nurse (I do homecare) taking histories, I ask about past surgeries, a woman will tell me she had a hyst.....then when I get to the part where I ask when her last pap smear was, invariably nearly every woman I ask, looks at me like I am a martian, and says "I had a hysterectomy, I don't need one". I usually explain that there can still be a risk of vaginal cancer, and perhaps she should check with her doctor to see if he would recommend the test. I'm not sure if doctor's recommend it and people blow it off, or if the dr them selves just never mention it.
(I may not do a lot of strenuous physical stuff on my job like in the hospital, but man, do I teach a lot!).........good topic to bring up, everyone should know that there is a contnued risk, and should check with their MD for their recomendations.

Sphinx,OMG......I am a nurse too! I did homecare for over 8 years!I loved it. Your right we do alot of teaching in the home. I went back to the hospital to work. I work 3 days a week. 7a to 7pm. I love it I get to be home with my teens 4 days a week! I did alot of bending a stretching doing homecare! Getting in and out of the car caring that BAG they weighted ALOT (lol)Taking trash out for the seniors. One day the homehealth aide told the patient it was not her job to change cat liter. Well guess who changed it.......ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I did not mind. I was thankful I was healthy enough to change the cat liter! Well Take Care. Angela

back to the top. This is so important for all women to know that cancer can still strike at any time whether or not we have had hysts. Cancer can be a silent killer and we all should take the best care of ourselves that we can. It is amazing that just a few minutes spent in the dr.'s office can save your life.

again!!!!

Perhaps this could be put somewhere permanent where it can be viewed!!

I believe this is very important as a lot of women think just because they have no cervix they do not need to be checked any longer

Pap smears still needed

Thanks so much for this info. I was wondering about this as I am a new princess. I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, I too, lost a dear friend from the same illness about 20 years ago. I feel already as I dodged a huge bullet with this surgery, that it is VERY important to do everything we can to guard against any potential problems in the future.

Pap smears still needed after total hyst. Death hit close to home :(.

Hi,
I was told to come back every other year for a Pap smear. I don't know why my doctor didn't say every year; perhaps it depends on why one had the hysterectomy in the first place.? I haven't had any bad pap smears either.
